Plot Summary

Impossible Mission Force (IMF) agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is asked by a superior named Musgrave (Billy Crudup) to leave his new life with his fiancée behind to rescue a former protégé, IMF agent Lindsey Ferris (Keri Russel), who has been captured in Berlin by a prominent arms dealer named Owen Davian (Philip Seymour Hoffman). Hunt assembles an IMF team to rescue Ferris, but fails after an explosive capsule implanted in Ferris's head is detonated. After her death, Ethan decides to take down Davian himself.

During an operation in Vatican City Ethan's IM Force are able to trick and apprehend Davian. En route back to IMF headquarters Davian threatens Hunt with retaliation targeting Ethan's now wife, an ER nurse named Julia Meade (Michelle Monaghan). Davian is subsequently freed by mysterious forces, indicating a traitor within the IMF. After Julia is captured Ethan is forced to track down the mysterious "Rabbit's Foot" for Davian within 48 hours or his wife will be killed. In Shanghai, Ethan infiltrates a heavily-guarded building containing the Rabbit's Foot with aide from Luther Stickel (Ving Rhames) and newly recruited IMF agents. Ethan then surrenders both himself and the parcel to Davian's men. He wakes to learn an explosive capsule has been implanted in his head, the same kind which killed Lindsey Ferris. Ethan is then confronted by IMF operative Musgrave who reveals himself as the traitor and explains to Ethan that the whole situation is a false flag. Davian will sell the Rabbit's Foot to known Middle East enemies of the West, knowledge of which will provide justification for a legalized pre-emptive strike and takeover of the region. Ethan escapes Musgrave and tracks down Julia's location with help from IMF technician Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg). Once at her location, Hunt is confronted by Davian who begins the ignition sequence of the explosive in his head. After freeing Julia from Davian, Julia in turn is forced to save her husband's life by stopping Musgrave and disarming the implanted bomb via electrocution, and subsequent recovery through CPR.

Before leaving the IMF to be with his wife, Ethan aks IMF Director Brassel (Laurence Fishburne) what the Rabbit's Foot really is. Brassel responds by telling Ethan that if he decides to return to the IMF at some point, then he will clue him in.
