Modern Family

Edit this Page

Fathers never know how their children and their own families will turn out, but Jay Pritchett didn't expect his family to follow quite this trajectory. His daughter Claire struggles to establish the perfect nuclear family in the face of three uncontrollable children, while Jay's son, Mitchell, lives with his partner and their adopted Vietnamese daughter.

This is just a fluke. She can take them again.

Claire Dunphy

Yeah, and she'll probably do even better. You are gonna have your choice of some pretty good colleges when the time comes.

Haley Dunphy

If I go to college.

Claire Dunphy

...What?

Haley Dunphy

I've been thinking about it lately, and I might... not. Later!

Alex Dunphy

Well, we took the scenic route, but we ended up in the same place.

Synopsis

Modern Family is a mockumentary that follows the lives of three families living in the modern world, who all just happen to be related. The show chronicles the extended Pritchett family consisting of Jay Pritchett, his new wife Gloria and stepson Manny, Jay's daughter Claire and her family, and Jay's son Mitchell who lives with his partner and adopted daughter.

The Delgado-Pritchett family consists of Jay Pritchett, his new wife Gloria Pritchett, and his stepson Manny Delgado. Jay has been married once before, to DeDe Pritchett, and has two adult children, Claire and Mitchell, who have families of their own. Gloria was also married once before to Manny's father Javier Delgado, but has since married Jay. Life at the Delgado-Pritchett residence can at times be chaotic due to the cultural differences between Jay and Gloria, where Jay is an old fashioned collective American and Gloria is a passionate, fiery Columbian. It is due to these differences that the bond in the family is so strong, as Jay becomes more open minded to other cultures and Gloria becomes more composed.

The Dunphy Family is composed of Claire and Phil Dunphy, and their children HaleyAlex and Luke. Claire is the eldest child of Jay, and makes a living as a homemaker, but was once a successful businesswoman before becoming pregnant with Haley. Phil makes a living as a real estate agent and prides himself in being a "cool" father. Phil frequently tries new ways to bond with his children, such as learning the choreography to High School Musical, or using slang when talking to them. The Dunphy residence is usually an eventful place, where Claire and Phil have to continuously juggle their love life with the needs of their children. Constant problems for Claire and Phil are keeping Haley's hormones at bay, keeping Luke focused and trying to find time for themselves.

The Pritchett - Tucker Family

 Cam, Lily, Mitchell
 Cam, Lily, Mitchell
The Pritchett - Tucker family consists of Mitchell Pritchett, his partner Cameron Tucker, and their adopted Vietnamese daughter Lily. Mitchell is the youngest child of Jay and is openly gay. Jay is uncomfortable with Mitchell's homosexuality and didn't accept the fact that Mitchell was gay, leading Mitchell to come out of the closet several times to Jay. Jay has a fear of walking in on Mitchell and Cam being intimate so he will always knock and announce he is entering a room. Mitchell makes a living as an attorney, whereas Cam is a stay at home dad and a self proclaimed "trophy wife". Mitchell and Cam adopted their daughter Lily in the pilot episode of the show. Mitchell was initially hesitant with the idea of introducing Lily to his family for fear of rejection, however, the family brought her in with open arms. Life at the Pritchett-Tucker household revolves around raising Lily, and the problems the two first time fathers encounter such as locking Lily in the car, overreacting over bumping Lily's head on the ceiling.
