Character History
Pre-Weeds History
Nancy Botwin was born in Dearborn, Michigan. Always a bit mischievous and manipulative, Botwin was the almost polar opposite of her do-gooder sister Jill. While still living in Michigan, Botwin was involved in a taboo romantic relationship with her math teacher Warren Schiff. Schiff loved Nancy very much but to her it was just a game, simply 'out growing the relationship' as Schiff later mentions. Nancy also dated fellow classmate Lars Ganard in high school, who was revealed to be Nancy's eldest son's biological father in Season 6 of the show. Nancy moved away from Dearborn when she attended college at Princeton University in New Jersey. It was here that she met Judah Botwin. Nancy dropped out of school, moved to Agrestic, California, and married Judah. Soon after, the couple welcomed two children into their home, Silas and Shane.
Judah's Death and Setting Up Shop In Agrestic

The Official Image of Season 1
While jogging with his youngest son Shane Botwin, Judah Botwin had a sudden heart attack and died. This event left Shane emotionally scarred and would play a large factor in shaping the youth's future actions. Nancy, financially strapped after a large kitchen renovation, decides to begin dealing marijuana in Agrestic to make ends meet. The show picks up shortly after Nancy has started dealing and had already hooked up with her suppliers, Conrad Shepard and Heylia James. The exact genesis of event has never been disclosed but it was revealed that Nancy was referred to Conrad by her degenerate brother-in-law Andy Botwin.
Nancy shows herself to be a legitimate dealer as she regularly deals to 'the adult crowd' of Agrestic. Nancy's clients range from city councilman Doug Wilson to Dean Hodes, a lawyer and husband of Nancy's friend and rival Celia Hodes. One of Doug's children, Josh Wilson, is also a drug dealer with whom Nancy does business with and are rivals. Josh is a closet gay and only featured in character once throughout the entire series, although spoken of.
Nancy's two children, Silas and Shane Botwin, prove to be handfuls as Silas is dating Quinn Hodes (daughter of Celia and Dean) and Megan 'the deaf chick' while Shane is having obvious troubles coping with his father's death and acting out. Nancy is often not around her children and has a live-in maid, Lupita, there to care for them. Within a matter of weeks, Andy Botwin takes refuge with the family after supposedly fleeing from Alaska and a crazed ex-girlfriend, further complicating Nancy's drug life as she attempts to keep it a secret from her own family.
Throughout the course of season 1, Nancy is shown to be taken under the wings of Heylia and Conrad as she begins to expand and grow within the drug market. Her actions even gain her notice from local Mexican thugs led by the enigmatic Alejandro. All the while this is occurring, Nancy is dealing with her own grief issues, running a 'fakery' (a faux-bakery that is a front for her business), and blossoming romances with Conrad and Peter Scottson, a local man that Nancy met at Shane's karate tournament. The season closes with Nancy becoming a big player within Agrestic as she establishes her own crew consisting of Doug, Dean, Alejandro, Conrad, and Sanjay and discovering that Peter is actually a D.E.A. agent!
