Neo noir covers films released post-1959 that still retain some of the hallmarks of classic film noir.
Film noir was a stylistic period of American film that ran from 1939 until 1958/1959. Touch of Evil (1958) is often considered to be the final film noir.
Neo noir displays many of the conventions of classic film noir. Neo-noir films gradually became self-aware as opposed to the classic films noir, which came around as a trend naturally evolving from the period, technology, budgets, immigrant film makers fleeing Europe, and, in the later period, a pervading post-war influence.
