It seems like Netflix has kind of slowed down on their acquisition of new movies lately - I haven't seen a lot of cutting edge new releases hitting the service. They've done pretty well on the TV front, what with Star Trek, Mad Men, and the rest, but it's been a while since I've seen a new movie pop up on there that I've legitimately been excited about, unless it's something old that I've wanted to watch again. Sure, today's release of The Expendables and Tangled is a good step, but apart from that it's a basically direct-to-DVD Adrien Brody movie and Alpha And Omega. Step it up, Netflix, or you're going to start losing subscribers, especially with the price hike rolling out.
Anyway, there's some decent stuff debuting recently/today, if you're in the mood to add some items to your Instant Queue. Check out some of these fine films, for instance:
| 1. Wrecked I've heard pretty middling things about this Brody-starring drama, but hey - it's Adrien Brody. | |
| 2. The Expendables I still haven't seen this. Looks like my excuses are all just about used up, since it's now available on streaming. | |
| 3. Alpha and Omega Looks like my excuses for not seeing this...well, I don't really need an excuse for continuing to not do that. | |
| 4. The Last of the Mohicans I have to admit that "STAY ALIVE! I WILL FIND YOU!" is one of my favorite-er lines of any of Michael Mann's films. And the movie itself ain't bad, either. | |
| 5. Dazed and Confused If you haven't seen this by now, well, lord, what's wrong with you? | |
| 6. Thunderball A messload of Bond hits or returns to Netflix, including Diamonds Are Forever, You Only Live Twice, For Your Eyes Only, The Man With The Golden Gun, Live And Let Die, The Spy Who Loved Me, Never Say Never Again, etc. | |
| 7. Dirty Harry Dead Pool and The Enforcer also hit the service, should you need gritty San Francisco cop films this coming weekend. Me? I don't need movies about that. I live it. | |
| 8. Airplane! Why, I can make a hat, or a brooch, or a pterodactyl! | |
| 9. Spy Game I admit to having a bit of a soft spot for this generally well-done espionage tale. It might not have impressed many when it came out, and it's by no means a classic, but it's an interesting look at spying gone wrong. | |
| 10. The Butterfly Effect Can you believe they made two sequels to a film featuring Ashton Kutcher getting raped? Luckily, only the original film is hitting Netflix. | |
| 11. American Psycho Love it or hate it, this film is...something to behold. | |
| 12. Felicity As big as my boner is for all things JJ Abrams, I still don't see myself getting too much into this little tale of post-collegiate love in the big city. Did you know Keri Russell was a Mouseketeer? | |
| 13. Conan the Barbarian Just in time to...probably not save you from the pain of seeing the remake, Milius' original film comes to Streaming. | |
| 14. What Women Want As creepy as this film's themes can be, it's still a relatively charming high-concept romcom, to the point where it recently earned itself a Chinese remake, of all things. | |
| 15. Bring It On I suppose we have this to thank for the continuing scourge that is Kristen Dunst. | |
| 16. Deep Blue Sea Oddly enough, I just recorded a Half-Good for this. Not sure when it'll be up, but in the meantime, go ahead and amuse yourself by revisiting the 1999 "classic" in all its glory. | |
| 17. The Blair Witch Project A Screened Bestie! | |
| 18. Buried This one isn't coming out until September 2nd, but you should probably go ahead and support bold filmmaking by giving it a watch. It's not unequivocally recommendable, but it's still a damn interesting way to spend 90 minutes. |
