What's so good about Netflix?

I've heard so many good things, so I finally decided to try it. Seems to me that the selection is extremely limited and it's impossible to find anything beyond what's listed in the pre-set categories. Am I doing it wrong, or were my expectations just too high?

Who needs it when you have this particular thing called the Internet. I know I don't.

Are you only using the streaming service? They have a pretty huge library of discs, and for someone like me that watches weird, obscure stuff from time to time it's the best place to find them. Only a few cities have really tremendous video stores with large libraries: Scarecrow Video in Seattle and Le Video in San Francisco come to mind. Also, I prefer waiting for the DVDs on some films rather than DL them off the web because DVDs generally have better video quality.

If all you're doing is streaming, then yeah it sucks for movies, but the TV selection is pretty great. As far as their DVDs go, they have almost everything available.

I'm in Canada, and when we got it here I was extremely excited since I have heard so much praise, that all changed when I saw the selection. It was abysmal to say the least, and my expectations were severely lowered. But every time they add something decent, I get excited...maybe that was their plan all along.

The main reason I subscribe is the TV shows. They are starting to build a good selection, and watching a $50 retail season for $8 justifies the subscription.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I'm only getting the streaming service, which even sucks a bit for TV since half the seasons are disc only. They really need to step their game up and get a lot more on streaming. Yes, I know it's the movie owner's fault, but they should be working them every day for those streaming contracts.

I have been watching the "South Park: The Hits" stuff, which is great, but there's just not a whole lot overall. At least not that I can find. What's with that? It's like you can never find anything unless you already know it's on there. How am I supposed to find stuff beyond the pre-set catagories?

Every time I see a topic with people complaining about Netflix I just feel bad for them. Saying that you can't find anything good to watch on Netflix is like walking into a bookstore and complaining there's nothing good to read just because they don't have the complete works of Dan Brown or Dale Earnhardt Jr's biography.

Don't believe the people who wine about poor selection, the selection is massive. Nope, you wont find what you want all the time; but Its still a stellar selection. Movies you want to see, movies you forgot about it, etc etc etc. Trust me its worth it.

@remaininlight: @regularassmilk: Then perhaps you guys can actually try and help me out by telling me exactly how the fuck I'm supposed to find anything. As far as I know, there are like 10 pre-set categories with a handful of movies listed in each. There's no indication that anything else exists on the service. I can search, but I have no idea what to search for. Inform me because according to you guys, I'm definitely missing something.

I think it's great.  I never buy Blu-Rays (well almost never).   The streaming side still needs a lot of help, but I'm watching Futurama on it these days which is kind of odd since I have the DVDs.  I'm just too lazy to get up and pop in a DVD when I could flip my WD TV Live Plus over to Netflix and have access to my queue and other suggestions.  I really hope they get The Simpson's soon.

By the way, if you're unfamiliar with it, this is a great site for US Netflix owners: InstantWatcher, com

have you tried using, oh, i dunno... netflix.com (or.ca)? What you're describing is the experience when using on a device, but when you're using a computer, you can browse by genre, new arrivals, or taste profile. if you're in the states, you can then add stuff to your instant cue, which shows up automatically across all devices.

I suppose Netflix.com works well enough. I still wish it was a bit easier to browse their entire collection. Thanks for the hot tip, Bro Montana!

InstantWatcher's a nice tool too.

Typical Rich Gallup attitude.

For me, it's getting to see a wide variety of films I haven't already seen, or want to see again but don't want to buy on Dvd. Some Dvd's I might just want to see a specific special feature, but I don't want to buy it for that one feature. Also, the instant stream is great. You will watch a scary amount of stuff you probably shouldn't (I watched all of Rescue Me). The more you use it and rate movies, the better it gets. You will be scared about how accurate it gets with the predicted scores.

Admittedly I don't like having to search for movies on my PS3 with the fucking controller and type shit in, but using the actual website works swell.

Well without Netflix, I never would have heard that Humpday existed nonetheless acquire the DVD and actually sit down and watch what surely seemed like some shitty low-brow comedy. It being on the streaming service though I gave it a try and got a enjoyable, sincere and tender movie.
