I'll admit it, up until this episode I wasn't really really sure about this newest season of Community. Getting Dan Harmon back is a huge boon but the loss of Chevy Chase and the eventual departure of Donald Glover could be body blows to an already ratings deprived show. The handling of both would go a long way into how the show was dealing with the many many curve balls being thrown it's way and tonight's episode proves they can still keep going.
Bottle episodes are a great way to show off what this show is really about, the characters and the writing. And what better than to shove them all into one room and have Walton Goggins interrogate them shortly after Pierce's funeral. It was great to have the characters once again turn on one another while having the usual rapid fire of jokes and betrayal within the group. With Goggins as a proxy for Pierce's anger and resentment for the group is gives us those moments we remember from past episodes around the table. And it all helps to lead up to an emotional and deeper ending than admissions about Chang's masturbation habits could ever hint at.
After surviving the polygraph test Jeff convinces the group to take whatever Pierce is leaving them in his will head on. One by one each member gets kind words about what Pierce actually thought of them, a heart warming tribute to the character even if Chase's departure was anything but. And in addition to sperm he gives some of them something they would truly enjoy or care about. Annie gets the tiara she once rejected, Jeff gets a good bottle of scotch, Shirley gets a vacation home for her family, and Troy gets all of Pierce's money but only on one condition. Troy must sail around the world in order to inherit the money. This gives Glover's character some reasoning to leave and the moment for Troy was actually somewhat touching. It's sad to see such an integral character go and I honestly don't know what the show will do without him. But they've proven me wrong so far this season, let's hope they continue to put my fears to rest.
