Things were not looking so good for Glenn and Tara at the end of last week. Glenn, still recovering from the illness that spread throughout the prison, collapsed after fighting a group of walkers, leaving Tara to finish the job. After seeing she's being watch from a truck and yelling at it, three people get out of the car: Abraham Ford, Rosita Espinosa and Eugene Porter. We pick up the episode with Tara in the back of this truck as they pass a group of walkers trying to snatch a balloon caught on a street sign, appropriately titled Crook Road. The walkers follow them as they're stopped by a road block. Tara is about to shoot them when Abraham tells her not to use her gun. Abraham takes great pleasure in killing the walkers, though he needs Tara's help to do it. Tara is surprised that Abraham is smiling and asks him why. He states that he's the guy in the world.
Michonne and Carl sit down to eat breakfast after laughing about Michonne in a plain white t-shirt. After a discussion involving soy milk, Carl brings up that he'd rather drink Judith's formula than the soy milk. He then loses his appetite and quickly leaves the room. Rick thanks Michonne for getting Carl to laugh as he almost forgot what that sounded like. Michonne doesn't tell Rick about Carl reaction about Judith though she does mention they need to get supplies. Rick says he'll go with, but Michonne tells him to stay and rest since he barely was able to stand on his own. Rick moves the couch against the door but seems to hurt himself further so he heads upstairs and falls asleep on a bed. It's very interesting to see Michonne in this more sensitive, nurturing role. She still is guarded about her past and keeps to herself in general, but she is much more open than she ever was in the comics at this point.
After they leave a house, Michonne tries to talk to Carl, showing him a can of crazy cheese she found. She offers it to him, but he doesn't seem interested. She asks what's wrong and he says nothing. She opens the cheese up, squirts some in her mouth and tries to make faces, but Carl still gives no reaction. Michonne makes an off comment that she doesn't know how to get boys his age to laugh and that she was good at getting her son to laugh. Carl starts asking her questions about her son, if she was married, etc. As they enter another house, Michonne tells him "I’ll answer one question at a time, one room at a time, and only after we’ve cleared it." Again, Michonne is opening up. It's also interesting she's opening up to one of the youngest in the group instead of Rick or someone else. Perhaps she believes they'll take pity on her or think she'll be too unstable to help out.
Rick is woken up to the sounds of men yelling downstairs. At first this seems like a dream or perhaps one of Rick's hallucinations, but it proves all too real when Rick sees a man with a gun going from room to room. He hides under the bed just in time as the man collapses on the bed.
Back at the house, Michonne reveals to Carl her son's name was Andre Anthony. Carl asks if she had any more, but Michonne says one was all she could handle. As she opens a wrapped gift, it's revealed to be a piece of art with a child's mouth taped up. Michonne investigates a couple nearby rooms to discover a child's room where children are dead on their beds and their mother sitting in a chair who appeared to have committed suicide. Michonne is deeply disturbed by this and leaves the room quickly. When Carl questions her, she says it was a dog and to not go in. Carl reveals to her that Rick let him name Judith and maybe she and Andre are together. Carl then asks if anyone else knows about Michonne's son. When she says he's the only one, Carl states her secret is safe with him.
Rick is still under the bed trapped when someone else comes up to the room, telling the person on the bed to get off. The man refuses and a fight ensues. The man on the bed gets knocked on the floor and sees Rick, but not before being knocked out or killed as it's not quite clear. The man who won now lays on the bed, preventing Rick from leaving.
Glenn wakes up and immediately asks Tara where they're at. She says she doesn't know but has been writing down every turn they've made on her arm. Glenn asks if they passed a bus. Tara confirms and says everyone on board was dead. Glenn yells at Abraham to stop, eventually cracking the back window before he stops the truck. Glenn attempts to leave, but Abraham tries to reason with him, saying they need him more and that he won't last a day by himself. Abraham reveals that Eugene is a scientist who knows how this all started out and that they're trying to get to Washington D.C. Abraham says Eugene lost contact with D.C. a couple weeks ago so they've been traveling ever since. Glenn still won't listen and when Abraham tells him Maggie is likely dead and even if she isn't, Glenn will never find her. Glenn punches Abraham and the two of them fight before Tara and Rosita break it up. Eugene sees a walker and starts to fire on a group of them, but mostly hits the truck. The rest of the group take down the walkers before we see Eugene hit the fuel tank.
With the man on the bed asleep, Rick slowly moves out of the room and makes it to another part of the house when another man comes up to get everyone. Rick thinks the coast is clear, but when he enters a bathroom he finds one more person. They fight and Rick kills him. He opens the door to the bathroom and leaves through the window, climbing down the side of the house before getting to the front porch.
Abraham tries to fix the truck, but it proves futile. Glenn apologizes for what happened and leaves. Tara follows him, as does Rosita. Eugene convince Abraham to follow until they can find more transportation.
Rick hears a man come onto the porch and is eating. Rick sees Michonne and Carl approaching the house. He is about to shoot the man when someone inside the house starts screaming, presumably because the man Rick killed turned and is attacking. Rick runs towards them and they run off.
Abraham talks with Tara and says she's a good person. Tara says Abraham couldn't possibly know that as he doesn't know her at all. He says he can tell she's a good person as they walk off. Tara doesn't understand why Abraham would want to go on this journey to D.C. other than to claim glory for himself if Eugene does indeed have an answer for what is going on and how to stop it.
Michonne, Rick and Carl are walking down some train tracks and come to an abandoned car. As they look at it, Michonne ask Rick what he thinks and he says they should go. As they keep walking, we see the sign says "Sanctuary for all. Community for all. Those who arrive, survive." Assuming this is the same camp as Carol and Tyreese were heading towards last week, it'll be interesting to see how long until everyone gets back together again and if this sanctuary is the real deal.
I'm excited for the direction of Abraham, Rosita and Eugene. They were some of the more interesting characters to come in the comics after the prison fell so we'll see how they get handled here and if they last as long. My only complain is that Abraham's hair is obviously dyed so it looks a tad cheesy. I'd like to think Glenn and Maggie will be reunited by the end of the season, but at this point I'm not getting my hopes up. I also am really enjoying the interaction of Michonne and Carl. Even though I still think he's a bad actor, it is giving us a different side of Michonne. I also don't remember the actor who was on the porch at the end of the episode, but I know he's a character actor in other shows and movies. I have a feeling this isn't the last we've seen of him and whatever crew is left.
What were your thoughts of this episode? Are you sick of Rick and Carl? Do you like the new characters that were introduced, or do you still need a few more episodes to judge? Let me know in the comments.
