The mid-season premiere gave us a glimpse into life after the prison for Rick, Carl and Michonne. Love him or hate him, we got to see a lot of Carl trying to prove to Rick how grown up he's become. This episode showed us how the rest of the main characters are faring after the destruction of the prison. It starts off with Daryl and Beth running through the woods until they're physically unable to move. We then get to see a very brooding, depressed Daryl. Outside of Carol and Merle, we haven't seen Daryl show much emotion about anyone else in the prison so it was interesting to see him in a different light. Beth, of all people, helps Daryl keep his mind off the prison while they try to track survivors. Beth has certainly come a long way from the timid child we found on the farm who was looking for an easy way out of the cruel world they live in. It'll be interesting to see if she continues to take a leadership role as time goes on or if she'll float to the background again. They track a group of survivors to train tracks, but only find walkers feasting on bodies.
Tyrese escaped with Lizzie and Mika. Much to everyone's surprise (and chagrin for some), Tyreese is holding Judith. You can count me among those disappointed they kept Judith in the story. There's only so much they can keep doing with her. Her alleged death in the prison mishap played perfectly and would've setup a more interesting relationship between Rick and Carl going forward. Instead, they'll most likely be reunited and will have to experience the loss all over again at some point in the future. The only thing keeping Judith around is that maybe it'll setup an exit for Carl, which desperately needs to happen. Tyrese and the girls are constantly on the move as the keep on running into a group of walkers or get stalked by them when they do stop to rest. They also end up at the same railroad tracks as Daryl, but before him. Tyreese leaves the girls in the woods as he tries to save the survivors he comes across, but is too late. He hears gunshots from the woods and when he goes back, we're met with *surprise!* Carol. That's right, Carol is back. She apparently watched the prison from afar when The Governor attacked and followed Tyreese when he took off. They follow the railroad tracks until they come to a sign about a sanctuary and what appears to be a railroad map with "TERMINUS" starred in the center. It remains to be seen if this camp is safe or another Woodbury waiting for them. Tyeese still has no idea Carol is the one who murdered Karen and David back in the prison. In fact, Tyreese doesn't even know Rick banished Carol from the prison since Daryl never got a chance to tell him before The Governor showed up. We'll have the wait and see if the truth does come out and how Tyreese will handle it. I am glad to see Carol back though. I wasn't a fan of Rick banishing her when she thought she was doing the right thing by trying to get rid of the illness spreading throughout the prison.
Maggie escaped with Sasha and Bob. Maggie is determined to find Glenn since he was still on the bus. Sasha tries to convince them to stay where they're at since it's an advantageous spot, but it falls on deaf ears for Maggie. The three of them find the bus a short way down, though it's filled with walkers now. Maggie kills every last one to know if sure if Glenn is among the undead. Glenn is not among the group, leaving Maggie more distraught than ever.
Speaking of Glenn, he wakes up still in the prison. He is still weak, not having recovered from the illness the spread throughout the prison. He manages to grab supplies and riot gear. He starts to break out of the prison when he sees Tara, still alive, and stops to help her. The two of them team up and manage to escape the prison. Tara tells Glenn she was with The Governor but couldn't find as she knew Glenn's group weren't bad people as The Governor claimed them to be. Glenn also finds out about Hershel's death. Glenn convinces Tara to help him find Maggie, though he passes out from exhaustion. Tara fights off a few walkers before noticing a armored truck sitting idly in the road. Tara yells at the truck and three people in military garb get out. One of them asks "You got a damn mouth on you, you know that? What else you got?" I won't spoil who those characters are in case you haven't read the comics, but I am very excited to have this group finally appear. I think it will make for an exciting rest of the season and beyond (assuming they all survive).
One final thought on this episode: Lizzie shouldn't be left with Judith. Her attempts at keeping her quiet when Tyreese went off seemed more like an opportunity to commit murder. I'm wondering if this will come into play later as she also appeared to be killing some baby rabbits earlier on in the episode. There was a character in the comics who did similar things so it will be interesting to see if the writers play around with her homicidal tendencies more.
