Affleck's Smelling Some American Bullshit

He's eying a story about the FBI's famous Abscam operation for his next directorial feature.

Affleck’s going through one hell of a career redefinition, ain't he? I remember the consensus being pretty divided on Gone Baby Gone, but The Town's pretty firmly established him as respectable director.   Deadline says he' considering a number of projects for a follow-up, right now, but the most interesting has to be American Bullshit, a script that was actually just recently on the famous/infamous Black List.

It’s about the FBI’s “Abscam” sting operation from the late 70s/early 80s, which sounds like it’d make for a hell of a movie after only just a little digging online. Basically, the feds hired this convicted con artist to concoct a scam to trap corrupt congressmen and senators. The work was for FBI agents to pose as a employees of a bogus Sheikh and his fictitious company, Abdul Enterprises, Ltd., and then offer the marks bribes for political favors like asylum and money moving.  When all was said and done, they nailed about six big politicos.

Really, this seems like the kind of operation Frank Abagnale (the scammer Catch Me If You Can was based on) might’ve come up with when he got a little more ambitious after years of working with the feds. Affleck's considering a couple other scripts like The Trade and an adaptation of Replay, but this is the one I'd want to watch.

Divided consensus on Gone Baby Gone? Not that I know of...

The Town is unequivocally fantastic, though. He's also been on a decent acting roll since Hollywoodland. I'm a big fan of his these days.

Absolutely loved the Town. Then again, I've always been a Affleck fan, even in the dark days (Ok, maybe not Gigli...). Looking forward to it.

I wasn't a huge fan of Gone Baby Gone, but I gotta say, The Town impressed me. I'll be looking forward to this.

I haven't seen The Town, but from what I've heard, its really good and I'm glad to see he's going to do another.  The premise sounds really interesting from reading the first few sentences from wikipedia (great research, I know).

Gone Baby Gone's plot was a lot better than The Town's

I must hang out on Giant Bomb too much, as I saw the "Replay" in my peripheral and thought it said that Ben Affleck was considering an adaptation of Rapelay.

It's always been apparent that Affleck had talent, perhaps a maker of poor choices? Sure. I'm glad he took time out to re-establish himself in the industry but I still thought he could have done something really interesting if he played into all the Affleck Hate & took on more villainous or hate-able roles.

His crowning achievement will be to win a Best Director Oscar for a film he makes starring Jennifer Lopez.

Dig Deeper into Ben Affleck

American actor, screenwriter, and director Ben Affleck is perhaps best known for his 1997 collaboration with Matt Damon on Good Will Hunting as well as his blockbuster-generating star power. Attention on his film career was briefly eclipsed during his sensational relationship with Jennifer Lopez until their breakup in 2004.
