Alien Viking Slays Priest, Captures Lonely, Middle-Aged Wenches, and Other Box Office News

Will Ferrell stars in the top new indie of the weekend.

In an event that shocked pretty much no one, Thor retained the top spot this weekend, merely dropping about 48% from last weekend, earning over $34 million. Clearly, the chiseled, baby-smooth chest of one Chris Hemsworth was too powerful for the competition. Namely, Paul Bettany's glower-power and Kristen Wiig's awkward misadventures in love, friendship, and street-shitting--you'll get it if you see the movie.

For their part, Bridesmaids and Priest came in 2nd and 4th, respectively. To use the alliterative parlance of a 1950s entertainment trade reporter, Bridesmaids was boffo! The filthily funny females farted in the face of the remaining competition, earning nearly $25 million. Meanwhile, Priest strayed from the righteous path, only earning a mere $14.5 million toward its $60 million budget! What a sin! What a scoop!

Yeah, this is what happens to me when I sleep six hours in three days. Anyway, as for the indie market, the biggest opener was the Will Ferrell dramedy Everything Must Go, which opened on a little over 200 screens and earned $825,000. Hesher, which opened on 40 screens, had a similar per-screen average, and about $127,000 earned. Go For It, the Latina-targeted "hip-hop" movie that looked sprung from the gates of after-school special hell, also opened on a little over 200 screens, and earned less money than Hesher. $110,000, specifically.

Say five Hail Marys, cross yourself, jump down, turn around, pick a bale o' cotton, and let's check out the top ten list.

1. Thor

$34.5 million / $119.3 million
So, I guess it's safe to say people will go see just about any big budget Marvel adaptation the studio sees fit to produce. Can't wait for that super-captivating Black Widow spin-off, and for that $150 million Moon Knight movie.

2. Bridesmaids

$24.4 million / NEW
Women be filmgoiiiiiiinnnnn'!!!

3. Fast Five

$19.5 million / $168.8 million
$440 million worldwide. I just love that this movie has become the benchmark by which all other summer movies will be judged this year. It's just so perfect.

4. Priest

$14.5 million / NEW
Bet the studio's glad they spent all that money upconverting the movie into 3D, right? Eh? Sigh...

5. Rio

$8 million / $125 million
It's gotten to the point where I'm almost begging for Cars 2 to get here, just so I can stop staring at this stupid bird every single week.

6. Jumping the Broom

$7.3 million / $26 million
Meh.

7. Something Borrowed

$7 million / $25.7 million
Feh.

8. Water for Elephants

$4.1 million / $48.5 million
Bah!

9. Madea's Big Happy Family

$2.2 million / $50.2 million
Blargh!

10. Soul Surfer

$1.8 million / $39.2 million
WHY. WON'T. YOU. JUST. DIE.

Dropped Out: Prom; Hoodwinked Too!

I love your write-ups, Alex.

Last week when I saw Thor I was a little turned off by Hemsworth's baby-smooth chest. Not because his chiseled body was intimidating, but because I find hairless men awkward.

I might go see Fast Five again, because that film was phenomenal.

I think its safe to say Priest will not make its budget back anytime soon if it only made $14.5 million on opening weekend. Word of mouth has not been kind to that movie.

Best title ever.

I think I'll go see Bridesmaids this weekend.  I had zero interest until seeing the review, but it does sound pretty funny.

Man, all you need to do is look at this box office list to see that the last few months has been pretty piss poor for movies.

Almost all of the girls in my high school have fallen head-over-heels for Soul Surfer. That's why it won't die.

I really want to see Hesher, despite the apparently lukewarm reception it's got so far. Looks really good.

Alex, YOU'RE boffo, my friend.

Let me hopefully be the first (and possibly last) person to ever say that to you.

You know I think people are really overstating how much of an achievement Thor being a success is. While Thor is obscure to the vast majority of people if you put together a good action movie with a good looking guy and a good looking girl people will go see it. I do not know why this surprises people, I mean people aren't going to turn away when they see thats Thor.

I really wish  Paul Bettany would get his act together I think he is a good actor and an enjoyable one to watch when playing the right character but he has been in nothing but rubbish for a while now and its disappointing.

I was going to see Thor, but now I'm just going to add it to my end-of-the-year movie rental bonanza, where I rent a dozen movies at once and kill them within a week.

Man, it feels like Soul Surfer has been in these reports for ages now. Fair play to them, I guess?
VioletEyedDragonon May 16, 2011 at 3:10 p.m.
too bad, priest was pretty good.
ProjektGillon May 16, 2011 at 5:01 p.m.
By making a movie in 3D, you know the studio has faith in it.

Pour one out for the last production of Tokyopop

Shit, Alex took the title of my next romance novel and stole it for his headline!

Turned from weird humour to Alex rage.
vinsanityv22on May 16, 2011 at 9:49 p.m.
Does anybody else think Alex needs to use the alliterative parlance of the 1950's FAR MORE OFTEN WHEN DOING THESE!?!

XD
