Andy "Gollum" Serkis to Direct Parts of the Hobbit

Smeagol goes second unit.

One great thing about doing mo-cap if you’re an actor--it goes by a lot faster than the live action stuff.

The Hobbit starting shooting about a month ago and, now, THR says that Andy Serkis is actually all done with his portion as Gollum. Like, totally done. It sounds like he was having too much fun on set to leave, though, because he’ll now be the second unit director.

He broke it down thusly…

“I think I understand Peter’s sensibility and we have a common history of understanding Middle Earth… A lot of the crew from the Lord of the Rings was returning to work on the Hobbit. There is really a sense of Peter wanting people around him who totally understand the material and the work ethic."

I recall there being a lot of uncredited directing on the trilogy by surprising members of the team. I want to say Jackson’s wife and co-writer, Fran Walsh, did a lot of directing, so this isn’t exactly a break from business as usual on a Middle Earthly set.

A very interesting appendage on this concerns Serkis’ plans to launch a performance capture studio and training center called the Imaginarium. If you think about it, that's really the next logical step as he’s pretty much become the Doug Jones of ping pong ball-adorned leotards. In addition to his advanced miming in King Kong and, soon, Rise of the Apes and Tintin, he’s also done a healthy amount of work with video games both in front of and behind motion sensors.

We're watching a new art form develop here, people! And it needs a teacher like Serkis to guide it!

This is awesome news for Andy Serkis. I was wondering why screenshots of him on the set were up so early. I guess they did all the scenes with Gollum first to get that out of the way so that he could help making the rest of the films.

I would die happy if I could work as an understudy for Andy Serkis. That guy has an undying passion for his art, and it radiates out of every performance he does.

This is all awesome news. All of it!

I think this is great.  I think everyone's biggest fear about The Hobbit movies (mine anyway) is that it won't recapture that magic that LotR had. It's really encouraging to see that Jackson's doing all he can to keep this in the family. He brought Alan Lee and John Howe back to help design it as well.

That man is simply the best at what he does. When I hear someone say "carve out a niche for yourself," I think Andy Serkis.

This guy is living the dream.

Didn't he also direct the cutscenes for the Ninja Theory games?
This dude is carving out quite a body of work.

Andy Serkis is pretty much the king of mo-cap at this point.  Bob Zemeckis could learn a few things, I'm sure.

Andy Serkis is just a cool guy.  How can you not be when you dedicate yourself so passionately to something and become so successfull at it?

Serkis is awesome. The best thing about Enslaved was his acting and voice work.

I agree with the rest of the commenters. There is just nothing you negative you can say about Andy Serkis. The man is passionate, his work is groundbreaking, and he's just one damn cool dude. I would kill to be half the man he is.

... by the way. Like Andy Serkis? How about Slither-esque comedy b-horror movies? Then watch The Cottage.

If I were to trust anyone to run a performance capture studio, it would be Andy Serkis. So this is awesome news, provided he doesn't stop acting altogether.

Good for him. He certainly seems like a guy who is capable to orchestrate this sort of stuff.

Props to Andy, he has my complete faith.

I'm sure that he'll do a great job.

Dig Deeper into Andy Serkis

Andy Serkis is best known, though not recognized, for his portrayals of Gollum in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and King Kong in Peter Jackson's King Kong. He has appeared recognizably in The Prestige, among other films.
