BBC Debuts Trailer For New Doctor Who

This is like the 50th season of Doctor Who, right?

I wish I could say that I like Doctor Who. It's not that I dislike it, necessarily, but it's one of those sci-fi institutions that seems like it's too big to get familiar with now in any satisfactory fashion. Imagine trying to become a Star Trek fan now, and being faced with some 30 seasons of television and 12 movies; that's kind of what it feels like, now, thinking about trying to get started with the good Doctor. I know we have some big Doctor fans here on the site (the personal page for the Doctor by Count_Zero was one of the earliest and best user edits), so don't take this as a slam: I get the feeling I'd like Doctor Who a lot, but I'm one of those people who has to jump on from the beginning, and it feels like it's a bit too late at this point.

With that said, the trailer for the latest BBC series of the show seems like it ought to please its many fans. Let us know if it did in the comments!

I definitely excreted some kind of bodily fluid from some kind of orifice when I first saw this.

Don't be silly Rorie, you'd be perfectly fine starting from where the reboot started, like many of us did. Just bare in mind it's extremely cheesy right at the beginning (more so than it is now) so it would take a handful of episodes to get into the swing of it. I know that's how it was for me.

I think you should take it as a challenge!
JeanLucon March 31, 2011 at 10:14 a.m.
@Rorie: Its never to late to be a Doctor Who fan Rorie. You don't have to bother with the old series in order to understand and appreciated the current series. So really you only have to watch the past 5 seasons, of which the first 4 are on Netflix instant watch.
Join us Rorie, you won't regret it.

Oh and yes this trailer looks amazing!
theMockingNoobon March 31, 2011 at 10:17 a.m.
I started watching Doctor Who with Series 1 (2005). That's a good place to start, it does stand as a beginning for the current ongoing series. Christopher Eccleston was a great Doctor.
Polygon_Wizardon March 31, 2011 at 10:23 a.m.
That trailer is awesome! Can't wait!

As for starting out on Doctor Who, I think you could even get away with starting with Matt Smith's run. It was a slight "reboot" when he became the Doctor anyway due to Steven Moffat taking over showrunning duties as well. The only downside is missing out on the awesomeness of David Tenant.

I'd still recommend starting with the first season of the reboot (Christopher Eccleston's Doctor is great, yet somewhat ignored post-Tenant), especially since the Netflix option would make them easy to burn through. Each season is only 11-12 episodes, so it wouldn't really take that long to get through them anyway.
Dallas_Raineson March 31, 2011 at 10:27 a.m.
Yeah, just jump straight into Matt Smith's first series, like I did. It's great.
FreylikeDaveon March 31, 2011 at 10:36 a.m.
As a lot of people said, Matt Smith's run as the Doctor is an excellent place to start if you don't want to commit too deeply.

So excited for this new season.

@victorfries:  Yes, I did this too and now I'm a big fan.

I'll get back to the Tennant and Ecclestone ones eventually, but not seeing them certainly hasn't hindered my enjoyment of the show.

Watch it for Karen Gillan for humanity's sake.

You do miss out a bit on River Song if you start with Matt Smith's run but that is about it.
Joeon March 31, 2011 at 10:52 a.m.
If you're wanting to get into Doctor Who, I'd suggest you start off from Christopher Eccleston's run (which is when DW was rebooted). There are some absolutely brilliant episodes within that series which shouldn't be missed out on. The show can be hit and miss, but it usually ends up being the former. I'd love to hear some Doctor Who discussion on the podcast.

Every Doctor is so different from the rest that it is safe to jump in then.
It is like every new crew in Star Trek.
onlineatronon March 31, 2011 at 11:07 a.m.
@Rorie: If you managed to catch up with Chuck, you'd easily be able to start with the 2005 reboot of the series. In fact, you should do it as a feature! 'An American Tale: Doctor Who'... I'd like to see that.

@TheScreenedDoctorWhoCommunity: Am I alone in despising Karen Gillan? Don't get me wrong, she damn fine, but I can't stand her mannerisms nor Amy Pond. Perhaps it's more the fault of Moffat's writing? A female character who uses her sexuality to get what she wants is beyond a cliche and downright despicable.
MadScientist18on March 31, 2011 at 11:18 a.m.

@Rorie  Like everyone else said...go back the season 1 of the reboot.  I was only watching the most recent Matt Smith season and decided to go back  to Chris Eccleston's Dr who season 1...glad I did.  Don't worry about all those past years of Dr. Who.
Faramir82on March 31, 2011 at 11:21 a.m.
I jumped on the Doctor bandwagon last summer and I'm glad I did this series is amazing.

Started watching them on Netflix instant and watching on BBCA.  I love Doctor Who.
ScanCase moderator on March 31, 2011 at 11:25 a.m.
Well it looks like i don't have to convince Rorie to watch Doctor Who the community has taken care of that for me. (No seriously just jump on the reboot, you'll be fine)

What I will say is that I'm actually excited about this season. Last season wasn't a failure which is all you can ask for with a new Doctor. I can't wait. Still miss Tennant though.
onlineatronon March 31, 2011 at 11:29 a.m.
Surprised to see everyone praising the last series of Dr. Who.

I like Matt Smith as the doctor, but the felt the series as a whole was weak. Amy is a horrid character, and the last episode, where she bought the Doctor back WITH WILL POWER was fucking redonk.

The christmas episode was fun though, more enjoyable with less Pond.
Rasta_Zerglingon March 31, 2011 at 11:46 a.m.
I started watching doctor who only last season and it was mind-blowingly awesome. Went back to the start of the reboot and didn't like those seasons as much. Can't wait for this new season to start. Matt Smith > David Tennant
Venatioon March 31, 2011 at 11:56 a.m.
Doctor Who looks interesting but I don't really know where to start

And also, I am in fact trying to get into Star Trek now, so far I've just watched 4 seasons of DS9 and it's great

And seen the newest movie which I now know is an alternate timeline
deadly_poloon March 31, 2011 at 11:59 a.m.
@Rorie: I am a massive Dr Who fan but I only started watching with the reboot in 2005 (mainly because I wasn't alive for any of the original series) -- don't forget there are only 5 series of 13 episodes, but you can really start with any of the series (but you must watch Blink S3.E10, absolute genius).

This looks pretty good, can't wait for the series to begin and find out what on earth (or not) is going on with River Song
