Because The Crow Just Wasn't Smarmy Enough: Bradley Cooper in Talks to Star in Crow Reboot

So, it sounds like The Crow reboot is starting to gain some serious traction again. According to Deadline, Bradley Cooper is in early negotiations to star in the Relativity Media reinvention of the dark revenge tale based on the James O’Barr comic book series. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, of 28 Weeks Later fame, has already been attached to direct.

Really? I mean, I love Bradley Cooper, but I just don’t see this one. Before we get into any of that, let me first say I’m not the biggest fan of remaking The Crow. I think the first one nailed it and that Brandon Lee was perfect for the role. Throw in Lee’s tragic death by way of an accident with a prop gun during filming and I feel like you’re going places you shouldn’t by doing this one. I'm not really doubting this has the potential to be good, I’m just saying I probably wouldn’t do it.

But, back to Cooper. The project seemed to be fading fast when Mark Wahlberg declined the role sometime back, but Cooper’s involvement certainly changes all of that. Now, I actually happen to think Bradley Cooper can actually act, but The Crow is the definition of a dark and brooding character. That isn’t exactly the type of role the man is known for. But, in Cooper's defense, there have been many times where a seemingly miscast actor absolutely knocked it out of the park. I remember there being a lot of doubters, myself included, when Heath Ledger was cast as The Joker. We were all eating our words when that first Dark Knight teaser came out. I'm definitely not saying Cooper's going to have a Ledgeresque performance, just that sometimes you never really know until you see the finished project.

Can't wait for the inevitable 'All Cooped Up' headlines...

I remember back in my high school days when I considered The Crow one of my favorite movies.

I still think it's very good, even if it is very goth. Still one of the best movie soundtracks of all time.

I should dig out my DVD and rewatch it.

meh never really thought the Crow was that great of a movie Cooper has the longish face for it though

I like The Crow enough. Not nearly as much as a lot of people. I'm looking forward to a modern take, especially with Cooper in the role.

I'm with you, Andrew.  There is zero reason to remake The Crow.
theodacourton April 13, 2011 at 12:15 p.m.
Bradley Cooper COULD ace the role and stop him from being type cast. That would be pretty good as he's too good to be limited to similar roles. However, I'd much much much rather see James Franco or Jiggle in the role! Don't you all too?

The Crow is in no way a product of its time or a "timeless" movie with an irreplaceable cast. They've released so many sequels to it that have all tried to recapture the first one I guess they just decided to wipe the slate.

Cooper in it is bizarre, though. I guess he just wants to show his range.. by becoming a goth hero and being on even more things to sell at hot topic.

The Crow is a great movie when you're young.

I hope this happens because The Crow's fanbase is typically terrible.

I figured it was only a matter of time until Bradley Cooper played a superhero, but I'll admit The Crow wouldn't have been my first thought.  At the same time, if this pans out,  it could be neat to see Cooper play against type as a more brooding individual.  This is a definite "wait for the trailer" before I decide to be excited or worried about a film.

Unless you can't see Brad Coop playing a rockstar, don't worry, he already did in The Rocker.
In case you couldn&squot;t tell, Brad Coop is the one on the right. And yes, I&squot;m making calling him "Brad Coop" a thing now.

I can't tell if this'll be good or bad.

I really have a hard time liking Bradley Cooper in anything.

...sorry, I mean Brad Coop. Brad Coop.

Dark and brooding isn't the type of role Cooper may be KNOWN for, but I would suggest watching Midnight Meat Train if you haven't seen it.  Cooper can get dark.  Also, we're talking about a REBOOT, not a REMAKE.

I don't think I could take Cooper seriously in such a sombre and melodramatic role. He should stick to what works for him, being kind of a dick.

Bad play, B Coop.

Bad play.

I'm still not comfortable with Cooper in a solemn leading role.

This is gonna piss off SO MANY GOTHS. I can't wait.

@jakob187: Oh shit that was him?

Damn, I always wondered who the lead in that movie was. Thinking back, yeah it is Cooper. Dude knocked it out of the park in MMT.
