BOX OFFICE: Animated Afros and Space Aliens Win Again By A Landslide

And Leave the Two New Weekend Releases in Their Dust

I'm not sure if this was a big surprise, or what we all expected, but the two new big releases this weekend not only didn't take the top slot at the box office, but came in at numbers three and five. Um, wow. Rock of Ages (the musical based on the broadway show of the same name) made a mere $15 million, which was more than doubled by Madagascar 3 which took the top slot. Adam Sandler's That's My Boy came in with $13 million, which is definitely on the low side, after his latest films Jack and Jill, Just Go With It and Grown Ups all took in over $25 million opening weekend. Are audiences finally wising up to the awfulness that has become an Adam Sandler film? I certainly hope so. Perhaps we can actually will him in to making good comedies again.

And, in its second weeks showing, whether you loved it or hated it, I don't think anyone can deny that Prometheus got people talking about the film. There were countless online blogs, articles and debates about whether it was a great or mediocre film. I'm not sure if it even matters which side of the spectrum you fall on, because for me, it was the fact that people were having these debates that made me excited. Anytime a film can create that much chatter it is a success on some level. However, sadly for those that loved the film, people that have yet to buy tickets did not get the memo that they should. While it managed to stay in the number two slot, it's week to week gross droped a full 60% domestically and It seems as if the bad word of mouth is winning the war.

Box Office:

1. Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted

$35.5 million / $120m Total Domestic / $277.5m Total Worldwide

Those talking animals are irresistibly adorable for families and ticket buyers. They couldn't resist the cotton candy looking afros, apparently.

2. Prometheus

$20.2 million / $88.9m Total Domestic / $128.6m Total Worldwide

You either love it or you hate it, but either way, you probably were talking about it.

3. Rock of Ages

$15 million / New / $19.2m Total Worldwide

Maybe it's time to give the 80s a rest for a bit?

4. Snow White & the Huntsman

$13.8 million / $123m Total Domestic / $247.2m Total Worldwide

Will this movie end up with a fairy tale ending? If it keeps making money like this, I believe so.

5. That's My Boy

$13 million / New / $14.4m Total Worldwide

Maybe it's time to give the 80s and Adam Sandler a rest for a bit?

6. Men in Black III

$10 million / $152.7m Total Domestic / $544.3m Total Worldwide

The Men in Black franchise holds the slot for 3 out of 4 of the top grossing buddy action comedies of all time.

7. The Avengers

$8.8 million / $587m Total Domestic / $1.4B Total Worldwide

As Nick Fury says, "I still believe in heroes".

8. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

2.2 million / $35.1m Total Domestic / $117.3m Total Wordwide

Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith and that kid from Slumdog Millionaire are amazing.

9. Moonrise Kingdom

$2.2 million / $6.78m Total Domestic / $13.8m Total Worldwide

Only in 178 theaters and already in the top ten. As it keeps expanding to more theaters I expect it to keep blowing up. Oh yeah, and go see it as soon as you can!

10. What to Expect When You're Expecting

$1.3 million / $38.8m Total Domestic / $48.666m Total Worlwide

In the number 10 slot for top grossing "pregnancy films" of all time. Who comes up with these categories?!

Any amount to Adam Sandler movies at this point is too much. But good to see not everyone was fooled by another one of his movies.

Seen Prometheus. It was great.

I am with Red Letter Media (aka the guys that made those Star Wars reviews) that all of Adam Sandler's films are a front for an elaborate embezzlement scheme involving product placement and corporate synergy.   If it manages to make a profit at the box office then it is just sweet gravy provided by stupid people.
Judging by all the trailers I've seen there is no way that movie cost $70 Million.  I saw two low budget comedies last week that had nicer production values, The Ten and Mystery Team.  So something fishy is going on.

Movie Idea - An extremely divisive comedic actor and his less talented friends pull off an elaborate scam under the guise of making a raunchy comedy with the biggest budget ever.  Think The Producers meet Ocean's 11 with potty humor.

I still want to see Prometheus. I'd probably love it.

obscurefanon June 18, 2012 at 12:55 p.m.

@Ghost_of_GhostDad: Oh there's a good explanation for that 70 million price tag. Adam Sandler got paid 25 million for this movie. Throw in the fact that he makes sure all his buddies who he makes these movies with get paid a ton as well and I'm honestly shocked that it didn't cost more.

@FinalDasa:

I think the reason That's My Boy failed was more because it was R Rated, most of the people who went to see that movie were 18 or over. Most of Sandler's crowd is preteens and teenagers.

Anyway I don't see Sandler retiring anytime soon, especially since his next few movies are PG13.

Ghost_of_GhostDadon June 18, 2012 at 2:25 p.m.
@obscurefan: Like I said Adam Sandler is the world's most successful and public con man.   This movie bombing doesn't mean shit because the idiot teenagers who couldn't get in will buy it when goes to video.  He also probable added enough product placement that the movie turned a profit before release.   Adam Sandler is a criminal mastermind.
obscurefanon June 18, 2012 at 4:27 p.m.

@Ghost_of_GhostDad: Yeah, sadly those idiot teenagers will buy it up when it comes out... unless... unless all those idiot teenagers pirate it and he gets nothing. Quickly pirates, to your search engines! (just kidding kids, don't actually pirate anything... although if you were going to pirate a movie...)

I will go see That's My Boy, only if it gets a lot of good feedback from the customers who go to the theater I work at. If it doesn't, I will skip it. Simple as that.

I am a huge fan of musicals, so I plan to see Rock of Ages, anyway. Everyone I talked to who saw it today, told me they really enjoyed it. I could see the smiles on their faces.

I really want to see Snow White and the Huntsmen. I plan to see it on Thursday, which is one of my next days off from work.

Finally, Prometheus is one of the best movies I've seen so far this year, next to Avengers, and John Carter. It was scary, and it also has a deep plot that makes you think.

vicsrealmson June 18, 2012 at 9:17 p.m.

Finally got a chance to see Prometheus, and it was a very interesting movie. Had to sit down and go through the Alien series again to see if it answered any questions. Which it did answer some...but it also left me with even more questions. Hope they make another, as the first evolution of the Zenomorph/alien thing looked very interesting. I'd like to see how the evolved into the ones you see in the movies and those horrible games.

And as the RLM guys point out, Super cost something like 2.5 million to make and has VASTLY higher production values along with two legitimate big names.

Im glad the two awful releases of this year flopped. I hope they don't make any more movies like them.
