Ice Age: Continental Drift was our big huge domestic movie opening this weekend, and well, it didn't really break any records. In fact, it was down from the premiere of the previous two films in the Ice Age franchise. Does anybody think this means the end of Scat's animated acorn seeking adventure? I would say nope…that is because the film has already made $339 million worldwide, so while domestically it might be in a bit of a slump, it will make enough money to most likely green light another.
In its second week, The Amazing Spider-Man held on to a pretty large audience and only dropped about 44%. The moral of that story is it is a "success" but won't be breaking any records anytime soon. I think the record breaking is being saved for The Dark Knight Rises this weekend…um, wait, wow, only 5 more days!!!!
Box Office: July 16th
| 1. Ice Age: Continental Drift $46 Million / New / $339m Total Worldwide It grossed $95 million dollars overseas this weekend alone...now, that is enough to start a fire. | |
| 2. The Amazing Spider-Man $35 Million / $201m Total Domestic / $521.4m Total Worldwide Only spent one weekend at the top, but his web is still capturing some hearts. | |
| 3. Ted $22.1 Million / $159m Total Domestic / $190m Total Worldwide "Nothing is more powerful than a young boy's wish... except an apache helicopter... those things have machine guns and missiles." | |
| 4. Brave $10.7 Million / $195.5m Total Domestic / $242.4m Total Worldwide As of right now, it is the 10th highest grossing pixar film; however being that it is still in fourth place after 4 weekends it is highly likely it will overtake Ratatouille, Wall-E and possibly could even come within striking distance of Cars before it ends its run. | |
| 5. Magic Mike $9 Million / $92m Total Domestic Things we now know movie audiences like: strippers and Channing Tatum and especially Channing Tatum as a stripper. | |
| 6. Savages $8.7 Million / $31.5m Total Domestic / $32.5m Total Worldwide The only serious crime and violent-filled drama out right now and is actually worth seeing. Do it. | |
| 7. Tyler Perry's Madea's Witness Protection $5.6 Million / $55.6m Total Domestic Doing better than Madea's Big Happy Family, but worse than Madea's Family Reunion, which means we might be seeing Madea again. | |
| 8. Katy Perry: Part of Me $3.7 Million / $18.6m Total Domestic / $22.7m Total Worldwide Yup, it's starting to officially enter bomb territory. | |
| 9. Moonrise Kingdom $3.66 Million / $32.4m Total Domestic / $44.7m Total Worldwide Now the second highest grossing Wes Anderson film behind only The Royal Tenenbaums. | |
| 10. Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted $3.5 Million / $203.7m Total Domestic / $473.8m Total Worldwide There are three animated films in the top ten, and we can tell that it is, in fact, summertime at the movies. |

It almost feels like this week was abandoned in preparation when Dark Knight Rises comes out this week. Poor Spider-Man dropped hard.
Since they don't recoup as much money from international tickets sales, there's always the chance that the 'Ice Age' franchise may move to the VOD/DVD market where they can hire cheaper actors and spend less money on animation and advertising. Not that I care.

44 percent isn't a big drop. And I don't see how this was a weak week. 3 movies passed the 20 million mark and the top five made over $120 million.
btw i obviously had to look up that percent number lol ;)
@VioletEyedDragon: I meant for new releases. Only Ice Age was a bit release which is strange for the middle of the summer.
@FinalDasa: I was referring to your comment on TASM's drop in the first sentence and then the headline in the second. but i know you didn't write the article so that wasn't a criticism of your comment. :)
Frankly, I'm amazed that that Ice Age franchise has lasted as long as it has. This is what, the third or fourth one?
@FinalDasa:
I have to agree with you in that this seemed to be a slow weekend at the Box-office. But, I don't consider 44% to be a big drop off, so I think The Amazing Spider-Man is safe for now, and still a success..
Now, the real test for Spider-Man will be to see if it can go up against the Dark Knight Rises, which comes out on Friday. Personally, I can't wait to see the last film in Christopher Nolan's Batman Trilogy.
"Now if there's one thing you can be sure of, it's that nothing is more powerful than a young boy's wish. Except an Apache helicopter. An Apache helicopter has machine guns AND missiles. It is an unbelievably impressive complement of weaponry, an absolute death machine."
