The Avengers went and broke all sorts of records again. For the first time in move history, The Avengers broke $100 million in its second weekend, which actually beat Avatar's second weekend by a full $25 million. Does this mean it could be on track to become the biggest grossing movie of all time? I think it will be a few weeks before we can make predictions on that, but it certainly seems like it could be on its way. Being released internationally a few weeks early has paid off as it has already made $1 billion dollars worldwide. Not sure if it was because of The Avengers or because of the pretty awful reviews, but Tim Burton's Dark Shadows opened to a pretty dismal $28.8 million. It still came in number 2, but I'm sure is not what Warner Bros would have liked from a Tim Burton/Johnny Depp collaboration that had to be expensive. Girl in Progress was the only other new release that made it in to the top 10 this weekend, but just barely weekend in the #10 slot.
| 1. The Avengers $103.2 Million / $373.2m Total Domestic / $1 Billion Total Worldwide It just keeps making more money and as I know people that have seen it two or three times already, don't think that is a trend that is going to slow down anytime soon. | |
| 2. Dark Shadows $28.8 Million / New / $65.5m Total Worldwide Tim Burton movies have done better and they have done worse. It made more money in foreign markets than domestic, which is ironic since it is based on an American Soap Opera. Perhaps they were already feeling The Avengers fatigue since it has been out internationally longer? | |
| 3. Think Like A Man $6.3 Million / $81.9 Total Domestic People still really want to know how to Think Like A Man…or like Steve Harvey that is. | |
| 4. The Hunger Games $4.4 Million / $387 Million Total Domestic / $624m Total Worldwide Stayed in the number four slot, and I suspect it yet again could have gotten a lot of The Avengers sold out over-flow. | |
| 5. The Lucky One $4 Million / $53.7 Total Domestic / $76.5 Total Worldwide I guess they have been pretty lucky...lucky enough to stay in the top 5. | |
| 6. The Pirates! Band of Misfits $3.3 Million / $23.1 Million Total Domestic / $97.6m Total Worldwide Astounds me every time I look at the international numbers and the fact that 75% of the money it has made is not in the US. Does the world just love pirates more than we do?! | |
| 7. The Five-Year Engagement $3.1 Million / $24.4m Total Domestic / $29m Total Worldwide At least it has now made its $30 million dollar production budget back. That's the good news. | |
| 8. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel $2.64 Million / $3.7 Total Domestic / $79.4m Total Worldwide The little indie that could! This drama with a star studded ensemble cast made 260% more money this weekend than last. It could be because of all the Brits in the cast, but it has made almost $75 million internationally. | |
| 9. Chimpanzee $1.62 Million / $25.6m Total Domestic Oscar is still winning those hearts. | |
| 10. Girl in Progress $1.4 million / New The Eva Mendes indie actually showed up to the game, which surprised me a little. Maybe I should give it a second chance? |

@Toxin066: I need to contribute soon! Still haven't seen it >.>
So glad avengers has completetly squashed hunger games. I loved this film, I loved that they recognised how much of a superhero movie it was in the scenes where they're all standing next to each in cool stances when the camera spins around them all. And the freeze frame at the end of the movie with them all looking directly at the camera while samuel jackson is saying something like: "If there's trouble the guys will come to our aid."
one beeeeeeeeeellion dollars!!
I too wanted to add more dollars to the total and saw it again, this time in 3D. Ouch, not having seen the new 3D, my eyes were hurting the first 5 minutes, but I'm glad I saw it again. Funny, sad, inspiring, and fun ride, with few flaws. It's not going to win Oscars for the actors, but it certainly won a lot of hearts and cash. Whedon and Marvel scored big, beyond cash. Hopefully they both can turn this into more future successes both collaboratively and on their own. Can't wait for the home release to round out the collection.
Did you put your pinky to your mouth as you wrote that?
If this movie is able to beat Avatar somehow, then the world will be as it should be.
Still gotta say that The Avengers is nowhere near worth the unanimous praise, but if it's beating Avatar's box office, and the enemy of my enemy is my friend, then... GO SEE THE AVENGERS! ;)
Also, kinda had bigger hopes for it, but if Dark Shadows continues to do poorly, maybe it'll at least put a bullet in this abomination by the same screenwriter.
Thank you for stating that Men and Steve harvey are mutually exclusive concepts
Still quite a way to Avatar's $2.7 billion, it seems once is not enough for people when it comes to The Avengers. I'm tempted to see it again because I missed the second bonus scene first time around.
