Cast Revealed for JJ Abrams' Super 8

Elle Fanning and Friday Night Lights' Kyle Chandler join the Abrams-Spielberg collaboration.

 Like this, but with aliens.

Vulture has news from the hyper secret production of JJ Abrams' Super 8. While much is still completely unknown about the film, two actors have now been revealed, and if you're a fan of Friday Night Lights, you may want to hold onto your butts. It looks like that series' star, Kyle Chandler, has now been confirmed for Super 8

In May, a description for another role was leaked, containing the following:

"NATALIE: Female 13-14. A natural beauty – she is stunning, but not the “cheerleader” type. Strong and confident, but has an underlying sadness. Should have a Midwestern feel.

It looks like that role will be filled with everyone's second favorite acting sibling, Elle Fanning

The rest of the cast will be rounded out by Ron Eldard, Noah Emmerich, Joel Courtney, Riley Griffiths, Ryan Lee, Zach Mills, and Gabriel Basso. The film began shooting on Monday and will be released in Summer 2011.

I'm looking forward to Super 8. It's being billed as an homage to Steven Spielberg's 70's films, telling the story of 3 kids who run around shooting a Super8 film, and later realize they have footage of an alien in it.

I'm just interested in whatever Abrams does, even though the trailers for this didn't give much away.  Friday Night Lights is a good show though, hopefully he'll be as good in the movie.

I like Kyle Chandler and have for years.  I originally started watching the short lived period drama "Homefront" because he was in it.  Later, I became a big fan or Early Edition and saw every episode (even the one with Sammo Hung).  I still occasionally catch a show on the Gospel Music Channel.  I haven't gotten into FNL yet, but they recently started airing it on ABC Family, so I'll take a look soon.

As for the Super 8 news...well, I don't know what it's about, but the last rumor I heard linked it to Cloverfield.  I wasn't terribly impressed by that one.  I prefer my giant monsters to be more Japanese in nature.

Screw the kids, I want to see a drunk Kyle Chandler, recently divorced and bitter beating an alien to hell for 2 hours and saving Midwestern America.

Super secret movies like Super 8 always interest me. As does JJ Abrams. Summer 2011 can't come soon enough.

The whole "kids running around  shooting a film, and later realize they have footage of a supernatural being in it" sounds way MarbleHornets-y to me. Considering how tremendous MarbleHornets was, I kind of have high hopes for this one.

For some reason Speilberg's involvement makes me less interested in this movie. Hopefully it'll be good.

Dig Deeper into Super 8

J.J. Abrams' homage to the Spielberg movies of the 70's, a group of kids trying to make an amateur movie accidentally end up witnessing the escape of a dangerous and mysterious monster into their rural 1970's town.
