Caucasian Cleopatra Casting Causes Calamity

Is the bigger crime Jolie being cast as the legendary Egyptian queen or that headline?

 MOAR LIKE THIS?
 MOAR LIKE THIS?
As much as Cleopatra VII, queen of Egypt in the first century B.C.E., occupies a place in the modern consciousness as a classic example of a strong, get-things-done kind of woman, there're still some important details about her modern historians can't quite nail down. What she looked like, exactly, would be one of the more obvious gaps in our knowledge. Details like that, however, never stopped the dream vomiters in Hollywood from many--many--stabs at depicting her in various movies, the most famous being Elizabeth Taylor's extravagant performance as the regent in 1963's Cleopatra, one of the most expensive films in history accounting for inflation.

Now, what I'm about to tell you, dear readers, may shock your fragile sensibilities to their very core, but the truth must be proclaimed: every actress Hollywood producers have cast as Cleopatra have been (brace yourselves) white. With a new biographical film about the life of Cleopatra in the works I wonder if you can guess the skin color of the woman producer Scott Rudin wants to play the titular role.

If you guessed white, well, give yourself a pat on the back and imagine it's my manly, sweaty hand. Specifically, Angelina Jolie has been tapped for the role and all indications are that she's accepted it. As one might imagine, this choice has caused some outcries from black media outlets who feel we live in an era when audiences aren't so sensitive to on-screen depictions of race that the casting of African royalty needs to be whitewashed. Essence.com's Shirea L. Carroll perhaps distills the sentiment best in her editorial on the matter that also lays out an obvious few black actresses who would probably kill in that role (Thandie Newton or Zoe Saldana top my list).

Perhaps I'm just noticing it more because it's my job now to report on entertainment, but these days it feels like accusations of racism seep into industry news on a monthly basis almost like clockwork. First it was  The Last Airbender 's casting choices on both the hero and villain sides. Then black actor Idris Elba was picked to play Heimdall (known in Norse mythology as the "White God") in next year's Thor movie. And of course who could forget the Twitter-incited controversy over Donald Glover maybe-possibly-vaguely being considered to play Spider Man? It's definitely starting to seem like, as Boston might say, more than a feeling.

In the case of Cleopatra, though, I'm not even remotely convinced of blatant racism. For exactly the historical reasons I mentioned above, Cleopatra's actual skin color and facial features are anybody's guess. It's not even definitively known who her mother was. When given such an ambiguous and notable character to cast any producer anywhere would default to the highest-profile actress they can get their hands on, and right now Jolie's one of the hottest sure things in showbiz. Ultimately, I don't think Hollywood's such a racist place (anymore), it's merely greedy.

Hollywood has always looked towards white actors as their main characters.  In a world where the majority of "moviestars" are white, it would make sense that they be considered first when casting large budget films.  Not saying that's the right thing to do, but it makes sense.

I remember seeing something a long while ago saying it was likely that Cleopatra was of a more Mediterranean descent and so more olive skinned than anything and for that, it seems like Angelina Jolie would be the right choice.

She is the first actress I would think of for the role, actually. I mean I only know about Cleopatra's image from movies and the way popular media depicts her. No one actually knows what she really looked like.

Well, until Cleopatra's remains are found, her skull gets scanned and then reconstructed, I'm reserving judgement. In the meantime, it seems like one can make an equally valid argument (on the grounds of appearances) for Thandie Newton, Zoe Saldana or Halle Berry to play her as Angelina Jolie.

So why would a British woman or a Latina be better than Angelina Jolie? I think that is no less racist than casting a white woman, that is to say: not racist at all.

What I'm trying to say is: People need to stfu, calm down and put their race-cards back into their holsters.

Am i crazy or did i read that Cleopatra was short and fat? Keep in mind, it's quite possible i literally made that up.

It amazes me that this is still a controversy as it's well known that the Ptolemies were known to heavily practice incestuous marriages to keep the line pure. The only real argument people pushing the agenda that Queen Kleopatra VII was anything other than caucasian is that her family was there so long they must have "mixed it up" a bit with the locals. Not a particularly compelling argument to create a revisionist historical image of a black African Queen.

That being said early last year archeologists do believe they have identified the body of the sister that Cleopatra had killed and she does in fact display both European and Egyptian features so there is finally some "maybe" evidence pointing towards the possibility of a mixed-race Cleopatra. But considering the fact that Jolie is of mixed race herself you would think the decision to go with her wouldn't be controversial.

Gina Torres anyone? Anyone?
BradGrenzon June 18, 2010 at 6:21 p.m.
The Ptolemies were put in power by Alexander the Great. and would have been of Macedonian decent. The dynasty was also marked by a great deal of inbreeding. The theory that Cleopatra was black may be popular, but it's not exactly commonly accepted.

Cate Blanchett. I'm convinced she can literally do anything.

wait, is this the Soderbergh Cleopatra? he's had that on his IMDB for quite some time

I am surprised no one has mentioned the most recent and blatant 'white actor' in a 'non-white- role. Jake Gyllenhall as the Prince of fucking Persia

@EasyPeasey: I would pay to see a Cleopatra-meets-The Klumps movie. You, sir, are onto something!

Does nobody appreciate my headline? (Fishing, fishing, fishing...)

I like the Cleopatra from ROME. She was spunky and saucier than an explosion in a Heinz factory.

I wont ever watch it, but it still makes me mad when they do crap like this. As some one who watches a fair amount of Japanese import, I want to see a lot more TV/Films with a female Asian lead and not just some one off character in the background. The Asian community has a ton of great actors and actresses that never get a shot.
mathewfinchon June 19, 2010 at 1:53 a.m.

It has been mentioned before, but it never hurts to reiterate.  Cleopatra was of Ptolemy descent.  Ptolemy was a GREEK general of Alexander the Great.  Alexander conquered Egypt, and after Alexander died, Ptolemy was in total control over Egypt.  Cleopatra was Mediterranian, and spoke Coptic Greek.
Also, on an interesting side note, most historians now believe that Cleopatra's traditional "suicide" was in fact murder from Augustus.  Augustus claimed the empire due to the fact that he was the adopted son of Julius Ceaser.  Cleopatra had an illegitimate BIOLOGICAL son with Ceaser.  Augustus likely killed them both to avoid a threat to his power.
Quacktasticon June 19, 2010 at 2:20 a.m.
Shouldn't 2010 be too late to care about the color someone isn't?  I don't think I'd flinch if someone cast a Korean Julius Caesar and a Roman senate played by Indians.  Want to cast Will Smith as Marc Antony?  I don't care.

I suppose the counter-argument would be something like, 'Everyone knows what race those people were, so no one can be accused of trying to confuse history.'  But isn't wanting Cleopatra to be a played exclusively by black actresses doing just that if no one knows what she actually looked like anyway?

I wonder can she put her fist in her mouth.

Um, Zoe Saldana or Thandie Newton? Dude, Egyptians might reside on the African continent, but they aren't black. Have you ever seen an Egyptian? They look middle eastern, not black.
Matt staff on June 19, 2010 at 8:50 a.m.
@Delta_Assault: I meant that if the producers wanted to go in that direction then they would be two ideal candidates given their youthful looks.

Dig Deeper into Angelina Jolie

Daughter of actor Jon Voight, Angelina Jolie has been an almost constant screen presence since 1993 and has won numerous awards, but is perhaps better known for her off-screen exploits rather than her on-screen ones. Married twice, Jolie currently lives with actor Brad Pitt.
