Dark Knight Returns Graphic Novel to Become Animated Movie?

The meanest Batman of them all getting a shot on home video?

 "...and I&squot;m the surgeon."
 "...and I'm the surgeon."

There have been literally thousands of Batman stories, but among the all time influencers for these many, many Batman stories, one that ranks at least very near the tippy-top (if not perching directly upon it) is definitely The Dark Knight Returns by Sin City creator, Frank Miller. That’s the one that Nolan’s movies have been getting their titles and cherry picking story elements from (Bat-tank, imitation Batmen, etc.) That’s the one that’s been the perennial crossover superhero best seller with Watchmen. That’s the one about a middle-aged Batman getting seriously pissed in a dystopian, cyberpunk Gotham City of the future and kicking the hell out of Superman.

Fans have hoped and wished for a movie version of DKR for a many a year, even if the prospect of trying to sell a graying Batman to a mainstream movie audience is a near-impossibility-- George Clooney in Batman and Robin, anyone? However, DC Animated’s been doing a great job of making such impossibilities into realities with their direct-to-video adaptations of important storylines like The Death of Superman and Justice League: the New Frontier. We’ve known that Miller’s other big Batman story, Year One (the basis for Batman Begins) would be getting this treatment, but now Bleeding Cool’s putting out a scoop that DKR might be getting it, too.

If it happens, it’ll surely be a long ways off. Year One could be out in time for The Dark Knight Rises’ theatrical release, sure, but this could conceivably make the home video run (at the earliest.) As some might recall, a latter episode of Batman: the Animated Series actually did a take-off on this comic that would likely be similar to what we might get, here. I’d be woefully remiss not to embed it...

Adapting Year One as an animated feature seems redundant since a good portion of Batman Begins was pulled from it, but if they can approach a visual style close to Mazzucchelli's, I'll be impressed.

As long as we can rewrite the dialog to be more Batman and less Sin City. This book has not aged extremely well, and it's unfortunate because it made a HUGE impact on the comics industry. But with Frank Miller slowly losing his mind comes the realization that things that I wrote off earlier as just being quirks were actually very intentional.

I got to say that cartoon from Batman: TAS was amazing in showing the different versions of Batman through the ages.  I would also love to see a film version of this graphic novel since it is an excellent story and the people at DC Animated know what they are doing.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks Frank Miller is going bonkers.

yes yes yes yes

@liquidswords: Going? Going implies he hasn't yet GONE bonkers. I swear, rereading Dark Knight, all I could picture was Marv whenever Bats spoke or had an internal monologue.

Michael Ironside for Batman. It was awesome in the segment and it would be fucking amazing to hear in the film.

I'm down.

I don't like current Frank Miller. I find his work disturbing, pro right-wing and kind of perverted. That said, old Frank Miller is still OK, even if the writing is crap, so I'm down for this.

I thought it would be cool for Nolan to go back to Batman 15-20 years from now and have an angry old Christian Bale reprise his role. Of course some rewrites would have to happen to have it take place in Nolanverse. It wouldn't really make sense either cause the new Batman movies would have been out by then. Or, if they would do it now with Mel Gibson, further encapsulating on how Batman is kind of a dick in DKR. Once again, would be a bit confusing though.

As long as they don't have Bale chewing scenery with his awful hackney Batman voice, this could be fun. Just get Kevin Conroy. He's still game, its simple. I don't need Michael Ironside phoning it in, either. Though he did a good job in the Batman TAS "what if" episode, but that was back when he still sort of gave a shit.

Oh crap, I didn't know Batman: Year One was getting the animated treatment too. Awesome. Oh yeah, this animated DKR thing is cool too.

Only if bat-nipples are involved.

That was him? I thought he sounded like Sam Fisher! Man he'd be an awesome Batman, in the more violent Frank Miller-esque versions.

@Lydian_Sel: I usually hate saying this but i feel its appropriate. Conroy is full of win

lol, I only really need that TAS bit. That was great.

I probably wouldn't watch a TDKR animated film. I know that story already. Same goes for Year One.

@batmanalk:  You said it bitch!

Dig Deeper into The Dark Knight

Batman has to walk the thin line between hero and criminal in Christopher Nolan's second Batman film, which won an Academy Award for Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker, and went on to become one of the highest grossing films of all time.
