Del Toro to Help Hulk Unleash his Anger on Network TV

He's creating a new show starring the jade giant for ABC.

The halcyon days of practical effects...
The halcyon days of practical effects...

Before we get to anything, I need to ask...

How many of you Screened heads have ever seen Lou Ferrigno in person?

Because I moved his bags once, years ago, while volunteering at a comic con and I can say that the man look bigger now than he ever looked on the Hulk. I’d even go as far as saying that he’s more jacked than the CG Hulk in the movies. It’s just… absurd.

They might not be painting Lou or any other body builder green in this new Hulk show, but those of you who scorn texture-mapping and bristle at key-frames will be glad to know that the jade giant won’t strictly be rendered in CG. They’ll be using a combination of puppetry, prosthetics and, yes, computers to make this man-monster - - an approach sounding a lot like what was done in Hellboy. And that’s appropriate, given that the prolific senor Guillermo del Toro is creating this show.

Deadline says that he and David Eick are putting together a new show for ABC - - the first coming out from Marvel’s new TV division - -  that’ll be about a Bruce Banner who’s still in his mid-20s and is, thus,  a “less reactive and more energized as the world is still his oyster.” Although, presumably, he’s still going to have serious anger problems despite all of that.

Lou is still in great shape, I am convinced he would look the same or better as hulk in the old series.

Guillermo del Toro  is a  workaholic. I like Pan's Labyrinth and the Hellboy movies, but where those enough to make him such a hot commodity?

To answer your first question, I've seen Lou Ferrigno in person before (twice!). Guy's a beast, seriously.

I'd be interested in a Hulk television show. But I'd be more interested in Edward Norton playing Bruce Banner again. Just saying...

Damn it, Del Toro, stop attaching yourself to EVERYTHING. You're going to have a heart attack soon.

I once saw a dude jacked out on steroids with a big mullet.  That was pretty awesome.

Could be good.  I'd watch it.

@Romination: Especially something as dumb as this, lol.

Unnecessary, but could be fun nonetheless.

Meh, but I'll give the first episode a watch.

In other news:  Guillermo Del Torro has announced that he will singlehandedly  work on every hollywood film project.

The thing is, just like the old show, it was always about Banner - not the Hulk.  I'm not too worried about how the Hulk looks, I'm concerned with who will portray Banner since he is who has to move the story and make you care about what happens.  This is problem with the Hulk movies, half the people want to see Banner's struggle to contain him, the other half want to see Hulk smash.  I'll say right now I prefer the first Hulk movie over the second, since it was a human story more than a comic book movie.  If this new series is just going to be all effects and 'roid rage then I'll stick with the old '70s version.

I'm glad there are some directors in the world that still use practical effects.

I'm probably just being very naive (not to mention ignoring years of experience) but I am incredibly excited about this.

I think it sounds neat, although I am wary of live action superhero dramas.  Some turn out fine like Smallville or the first season of Heroes, but most are have short lives.  Bird of Prey and The Flash didn't make it past season 1, and non-licensed hero shows like M.A.N.T.I.S., Jake 2.0, and Now & Then didn't fair any better.   That might be one of the reasons why some go the comedic or lighter route such as the 60's Batman, Wonder Woman and The Greatest American Hero.  All of those lasted a few years.  However, I have hopes that this new project will do well.  I don't have much faith in broadcast TV, since they tend to cancel stuff even before it has a decent opportunity to find an audience, but ABC seems to be having some luck with No Ordinary Family, so perhaps they're on a roll.
