Del Toro To Take On Van Helsing?

Hey, a new movie with vampires in it. Who would've thought?

Well, maybe there were some good aspects to Van Helsing after all.
Well, maybe there were some good aspects to Van Helsing after all.
I apologize to everyone who's participated in hypnotherapy in an effort to push away the memory of having viewed 2004's Van Helsing, which was, of course, a truly awful example of Stephen Sommers filmmaking (this is the man who followed up Van Helsing with GI Joe, lest you forget). As Pajiba reports it, Universal may be proceeding with a reboot of the franchise, for some reason, but at least have the good sense to bring in a ringer: Guillermo del Toro will likely be working on the story, producing, and perhaps directing if the stars align.

It's hard to argue with del Toro's track record, so if anyone could do a good Van Helsing story (and there's no reason to think that it couldn't be done well), it might be him. Blade II was the best of that trilogy, so it's not like del Toro doesn't have experience with making vampires exciting. This is all still in rumorland, but it's an intriguing rumor, at least. I kind of hope they go for an older, brooding Van Helsing like Francis Ford Coppola did for Bram Stoker's Dracula. He might be a little short for the role, but seeing Christoph Waltz gallavanting across Europe and hunting vampires has a certain appeal to me.

Poor Del Toro.  This guy must have enough money, because if did the Hobbit right, and you know he would have, he'd be able to make any movie he ever wanted.  There are not a lot of directors who have that luxury no matter how good they are.  Does he really want to do this?  Part of me say I hope so, and another part says no.  I wish he wasn't off the hobbit because the dialogue would have been perfect for him.  If there is one problem I had with Del Toro is that sometimes the dialogue from some of the actors in his films came off cheesy or pushed.  I believe this is because of the language barrior.

Well, it would probably be an interesting movie at the least.  That being said, other than Blade II, I never really liked del Toro's movies.  Has he actually made a movie that did well?  I'm pretty sure that the Hellboy movies were a bit of a disappointment, and really didn't fall in love with Pan's Labyrinth like some other people did.  Either way, I'll probably see the thing--for some reason, vampire cinema is something that I just can't quit.

I really like The Devils Backbone by del toro. But I feel this would just turn out like mimic and be nothing special.

I don't care what anyone says, I really enjoyed Van Helsing.

I also look forward to this, though I despise De Toro as a Director no one can deny he has a wonderful flair for creating worlds that dazzle, lets hope he pulls it off.

@johnnydamage: Any word on why he bailed on the Hobbit?  He's still attached, I guess, but maybe it was too constrained a production for him?
Kelswitchon June 10, 2010 at 1:02 p.m.
@Strange_Bundle: He got sick of all of the studio delays.

Hope dracula's brides make an appearance again!
they were awesome.
Mistress_Redheadon June 10, 2010 at 1:31 p.m.
@CherryBomb: I would imagine so... considering they are part of the Dracula storyline! :D
Kraznoron June 10, 2010 at 1:50 p.m.

Dracula's brides were actually one of my least favorite parts of it due to the horrible CG fakery that constantly stretched their faces in absurd ways. Hugh Jackman was alright though, but yeah, that movie was pretty bad. Not sure who thought this was a good idea, hope Del Toro spends his time on something more worthwhile.

Van Helsing was the worst of the Sommers summer blockbusters, but it wasn't insultingly bad in the way that Transformers was or just downright piss you off bad like Transformers 2. Van Helsing is watchable if you're able to turn your brain off while doing so. You can't expect a summer flick like that to have substance. Same with G. I. Joe. I enjoyed G. I. Joe, quite a bit. I went into the theater expecting a cheesy, kind of stupid, action flick with a lot of poorly written lines and a lot of shit blowing up. In other words a pretty faithful example of what the cartoon was. And hey thats exactly what Sommer's delivered.

As for Del Toro taking on Van Helsing. Its interesting, but I'd rather see him go and do something unique and different again. Pan's Labyrinth was a very good movie on multiple levels. It would be nice to see him attached to something smaller like that again instead of a bunch of big budget Hollywood flicks.

Del Toro would bring an awesome visual style to the movie, but I don't know how good he could make the story. I hated the story of Hellboy II, but loved the art style of it.

I don't understand all the Van Helsing hate, I thought it was a fun action/adventure flick.
FreylikeDaveon June 10, 2010 at 3:04 p.m.
As a huge Del Toro fan, this is very intriguing (although its no At The Mountains of Madness!!). Im very much in the camp of thinking Van Helsing was mess, although I do have a soft spot for the short 5-10 minutes where he hunted Mr Hyde, before he got mixed up in all the camp vampire nonsense.

Although, now you have proposed the idea of Christoph Waltz as Helsing, anything other than that will be a crushing disappointment now. Way to go...
Sanjon June 10, 2010 at 3:19 p.m.

That's one nice pair of aspects.

I kinda liked Van Helsing, but I'm all down with a Del Toro helmed reboot.
CashBaileyon June 10, 2010 at 4:53 p.m.
VAN HELSING is one of the worst things ever committed on celluloid. And Del Toro has so many amazing projects he's attached to, like DROOD, AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS, LIST OF SEVEN, MURDERS ON CARNIVAL ROW and the list goes on and on.

Seeing as though Dracula re-boots seem to be coming into vogue Universla might push him into directing this. Although the one I'm really looking forward to is a project in development called THE LAST VOYAGE OF THE DEMETER. I read that script and it's terrific.
raidingkvatchon June 10, 2010 at 4:59 p.m.
If they have to do another of Van Helsing movie then I definitely think Del Toro's the right guy to do it.
Damianon June 10, 2010 at 6:36 p.m.
I'm in for anything Del Toro. I wish he'd work more often on his more personal projects. But again ... anything.
thabigredon June 10, 2010 at 11:28 p.m.
great fucking news.
Dimseyon June 11, 2010 at 12:53 a.m.
...The first Blade was the best in the trilogy.
But yeah I wouldn't mind seeing a Del Toro directed take on Van Hellsing.

Dig Deeper into Van Helsing
