Star Wars Rebels is the next animated series from Lucasfilm now under the direction of Disney. You may remember in March when Disney/Lucasfilm announced the end of The Clone Wars, the long running Star Wars animated show, in hopes of going into a new direction. I guess that direction will be Star Wars Rebels, which will take place between episodes 3 and 4. It does make some sense since Clone Wars had a new trilogy focus (taking place between episodes 2 and 3) and I wonder if the setting of the series can give hint to a possible setting for the upcoming films.
The new series does have a hefty pedigree that comes with it. Dave Filoni had been working on Clone Wars and has done work with Avatar: The Last Airbender. Greg Weisman created Gargoyles and produced both Young Justice and Spectacular Spider-Man. And finally there is writer/director Simon Kinberg who has written movies like X-Men: First Class, Jumper, and Mr. And Mrs. Smith. No official look of the show will be given until July and the show itself won't debut until fall of 2014 on Disney XD.
A new show had been rumored for awhile before Disney purchased Lucasfilm, specifically a live action bounty hunter serial. I suppose as new movies are on the horizon Disney would like to focus on a different era and timeline. However, as we've all seen before, Disney will cancel and restart a show on a whim to help "fit" their outlook on a franchise. Hopefully this isn't the same being done to Star Wars and they have a firm direction decided on, otherwise Rebels will have a short shot to make it.
