This week the DVD and Blu-Ray releases are all about the men. We have John Carter – the civil war vet that is transplanted to Mars and encounters a lush planet inhabited by 12-foot tall barbarians. We have Denzel Washington – who is so rad that no matter what he does or who he plays you see it because it is Denzel. We have Walter White – who is probably the strangest yet most intriguing character to be a drug king pin in all of television and cinematic history. I know that perhaps John Carter does not belong on the list with these other two men. However, there is a part of me that cannot help but feel that somehow this movie was marketed so terribly that it couldn't help but bomb. In there somewhere there might actually be a decent character and movie. Now, I also might be being generous here, but at least now I can find out and judge for myself without spending more on movie ticket than I would like for this.
Denzel's movie Safe House looks, well, very Denzel-like and much of what he does best. He is a bad-ass rogue CIA-agent who teams up with rookie Ryan Reynolds when he is attacked him, presumably by the CIA itself. This looks a little more The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 than Training Day, but I'm always happy to spend some time with him.
As for Walter White…I am behind and I will be watching this. Today. Can't wait to see where the story has gone, and can't wait to see where it will go in the new season. I suspect Walter is becoming even more engrained in the drug world, and as I love this storyline and not really his family life I can only hope I am right.
| 1. John Carter This feels like it is a pretty quick DVD release, but then again, I'm sure everyone involved will be hoping to recoup some of the money they lost on what is technically the biggest bomb of all time. Is it really that bad or did it get a bad wrap? | |
| 2. Safe House God damn I love me some Denzel. I'm not sure if this looks like the best Denzel movie, or the best movie in general, but I'll be sucked in to watching. | |
| 3. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island Sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth and The Rock has made himself a pretty solid and successful movie career. I can't see a world in which I recommend watching this movie, but perhaps your children will be entertained. | |
| 4. Act of Valor A real life military propaganda film starring real life Navy SEALS. Audiences loved it, critics did not. You decide which category you fit in. | |
| 5. Machine Gun Preacher Guy is in a gang. Guy gets out of a gang. Guy wants to help children. Guy goes to Sudan and picks up a machine gun and shoots things to help get an orphanage made. Why is there something about this that feels very wrong? | |
| 6. Breaking Bad The Complete Fourth Season. You have a month to catch up or re-watch before Season 5 premieres on July 15th. Do it. Do it now. | |
| 7. Workaholics Seasons 1 and 2. I just can't find anything about this show that makes it funny to me, but if it makes you chuckle, pick it on up. | |
| 8. Falling Skies The Complete First Season. I heart Noah Wylie, but have yet to watch his post-alien-apocalypse drama. This is my chance. Will I do it? Should I do it? Should you do it? I just don't know. | |
| 9. The Sting Blu–Ray Universal 100th Anniversary Edition. Starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford…one of the best con men films ever mad. Enough said. | |
| 10. Dragon Ball Z Kai Blu-Ray - Part 8. Again, I'm not too qualified to talk about Anime, but get this if you love it! |

John Carter is actually enjoyable. It just got a boatload of bad press because of the marketing and budget which was all anybody ever talked about whenever John Carter got discussed. People pretty much wanted the movie to be the next Waterworld.
Act of Valor really impressed me especially knowing it's rather close to what actually goes on, mainly because those actors are Navy Seals.
Never saw John Carter but heard it was...alright. And Safe House made a good chunk of cash but I don't know a single person who saw it.
John Carter was quite good. Really enjoyed it. Sucks it did so bad though.
@RockinKemosabe: Hey wait I loved Waterworld I thought it was awesome!
Yeah, John Carter was actually pretty decent.
I loved John Carter. So far it's my favorite film of the year. Definitely considering buying it.
As others here have said, John Carter was actually really, really enjoyable.
Granted it had flaws, and Dominic West's character was pretty much wasted, but it was hugely fun and I loved spending time in the world with those characters.
Damn shame it bombed so badly.
Description of Machine Gun Preacher is totally wrong.
It isn't just as autonomous as man bike help kids. He was in a gang but he got moved by children in poor countries that he wanted to help with a revelation he got from God. Then he continued to spend money and try to help them as much as he could. To the point that he destroyed his family and friendships for the kids he never met. It's a movie about the TRUE story about a guy who gave up his life for poor neglected children in another country. Please do more research before explaining a movie.
John Carter was great. I don't regret seeing it in theaters. Also it isn't the biggest bomb of all time, a movie like Green Lantern actually lost more.
@CrimsonAvenger:
Thank god I'm not alone in my love for John Carter. It is simply one of the best movies I've seen this year, and I plan to buy it.
I also want to see Machine Gun Preacher, and maybe even Journey 2. Safe House was a fun, and gritty action movie, made even more entertaining by Denzel Washington.

Finally another person who loves that movie!
Journey 2 surprised me by being so much fun.
I went on a shopping trip this afternoon to Ray's Food Place, which is my local Supermarket, and I noticed that they were selling John Carter for three dollars less than the standard $19.99 price.
So, I bought it, and it's now part of my DVD collection.
