When thinking about male stripper films, there are only a few that really come to mind. When making my list of Best (and Worst) Cinematic Strippers, it was hard to come up with two (although apparently I had missed, For the Ladies) that featured men more than women. Luckily, Magic Mike changed all of that and surprised audiences by being a quality film that deals with men who take their clothes off for money. I'm all for that.
Just in time for Halloween – Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is released on DVD and Blu-Ray. I can't help but wonder if it would have been a better idea for this movie to come out in the theaters this week instead of early in the summer? It might have helped to market it as a truly/creepy vampire film. On the other hand, I'm not sure if there is anything that could have actually helped, but it couldn't have hurt.
In the specialty market, Take This Waltz was released and you should watch Michelle Williams struggle with her desires to have an affair and cheat on Seth Rogen, because its good.
*Note there were conflicting reports of Savages being released today vs. Nov. 13th, but a quick scan of the internets seems to show it will be released on the latter date.
DVD/Blu-Ray: October 23rd
| 1. Magic Mike Experience the Magic of Mike…in Magic Mike. Channing Tatum proved he could be funny in 21 Jump Street and a serious actor in Magic Mike and I wonder when we will stumble upon something this kid can't do??? | |
| 2. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter I still want this too be so good. Is it too late to be holding on to hope? | |
| 3. Take This Waltz As reviewed by Matthew Marko, he says about this film: A showcase for the considerable talents of Michelle Williams, Take This Waltz is a nuanced take on familiar romantic comedy tropes that wrings real drama out of the most stock of premises. | |
| 4. The Invisible War A harrowing documentary about the epidemic of rape in the US military. Hard to watch? Probably. Important to watch? Definitely. | |
| 5. Seeking a Friend for the End of the World Steve Carell and Keira Knightley should deliver a charming comedy about two people during the end of the world, right? Too bad, that just isn't true. | |
| 6. Star Wars: The Clone Wars - The Complete Fourth Season The adventures of Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker in a television series. |

I want to see Magic Mike because I like Soderbergh but I'm afraid it is the woman's type of movie it seems to be.
ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER is actually incredibly entertaining. And I know I'm not the only person on the site who believes that.
You might be right that Halloween season would have been a better time for ALVH to come out (or during that slump in August/September), but in the end it doesn't matter. Lower budget, R-rated, horror/action/comedies like that are meant for the DVD market. It could become a cult classic lol
