DVD/Blu-Ray Releases: Harry Potter Is Country Strong

Actually, I'd love to see that.

No, Voldemort! Anything but a useless gift set!
No, Voldemort! Anything but a useless gift set!
I'm betting that the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1 DVD is going to sell at least a few hundred copies of its DVD. I mean, the kids these days, they love their Harry Potter, to the point where some of them even read the novelizations of the movies!

Apart from that, you have Country Strong to look forward to. You know, if you're into that kind of thing. I wish I could discuss the ending of this film with you, because it's so relentlessly melodramatic that I almost couldn't help but laugh when I was watching it. Still, pretty girls, decent music, and a searing look at the tenuous political situation in post-war Berlin: what more could you ask for?

Also appearing: a number of other films, including two Pixar classics: Cars and The Incredibles, both of which hit Blu-Ray for what I presume is the first time. Well, one of those is a classic, at least.

1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I

Yeah, I guess this was popular. I'm kind of surprised they're releasing it now; generally these things are put out a week or two before their sequels come out, especially when they're this close together, to get people pumped up for the new film. But I guess the Potter movies are such reliable $900 million machines that Warner Bros. doesn't really have to worry about. For some reason this is coming out on Friday instead of Tuesday, and there's also a Dobby bookend edition should you so desire it. There's also a bizarre Harry Potter Years 1-7 Gift Set coming out, as well. Why would you buy that now when the last movie in the series is going to be on disc in six or seven months?

2. Country Strong

I still kind of admire anyone who can make such a straightforward melodrama in this day and age. This is a Lifetime movie writ large, and is stupid as all hell, but the music's pretty catchy and you can enjoy it if you don't think too hard.

3. White Material

That title means pretty much what you think it means: white lady desperate to hold onto her family's coffee plantation as an African civil war bears down on her.

4. Marwencol

It's rare for any film to maintain a 100% Rotten Tomatoes meter, let alone with over 50 reviews, but this documentary, about a man viciously beaten into a coma, only to emerge with a desire to recreate a WWII-era Belgian town in miniature in his back yard.

5. Heartless

Any film that can describe itself as "part Donnie Darko, part Guillermo Del Toro" has my attention, at least.

6. Cars

Ah, the worst of Pixar comes to high-definition Blu-Ray. It's hard to judge this film; it's the worst Pixar has made, but that's still a far sight better than most other films that come out these days.

7. The Incredibles

NOW we're talking. The Incredibles is arguably my favorite Pixar film, and comes to Blu-Ray on a four-disc Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital Copy set. Now here's a movie I wouldn't mind seeing a sequel to, at least far more than a Cars sequel.

8. Le Cercle rouge

The full-length director's cut of this crime drama from the director of Le Samourai is seen for the first time in America (apparently), thanks to Criterion. Should be worth a rental!

9. Farewell

I meant to catch this when it came to theaters, but it seemed a bit depressing. An espionage thriller with a bizarre cast: Diane Kruger, Willem Dafoe, Guillaume Canet (director of Tell No One), and Fred Ward, of all people.

10. Behind the Burly Q

A documentary about Burlesque. Shockingly enough, Dita Von Teese managed to not be filmed for it.

11. H.R. Pufnstuf

The world's most obvious weed reference comes to DVD with H.R. Pufnstuf: Complete Series Collector's Edition, alongside Dallas: The Movie Collection, Car 54 Where Are You: Complete First Season, Kathy Griffin: My Life On The D-List, Seasons 3 and 4, Man vs. Wild: Season 5, Dragnet 1970: Season Four, and Whitney Cummings: Money Shot.

Cars isn't as bad on the second viewing. Still their worst.

Already got this quest, oh well.
tgammeton April 12, 2011 at 9:22 a.m.
Cars already had a Blu-ray release (I have it), but this will be a first for  The Incredibles I believe. I'm looking forward to getting my grubby paws on it. This will leave Finding Nemo as the only Pixar film not on Blu-ray.\

Also, my 2 cents... A Bug's Life is by far Pixar's worst.
skrutopon April 12, 2011 at 9:26 a.m.
I wasn't a fan of A Bug's Life. I think that's their worst.  Cars wasn't all that great, but it was decent, though the sequel looks awful.  I saw Up the other day, and I simply don't get why people love that movie so much.  It was good, but I didn't think that it was spectacular.

I think Tangled is next on my Netflix queue.  I'm looking forward to seeing that one.  My wife loved it.

Because smart people use critical thinking.  Stupid people buy them.  Because they're stupid.

I don't understand why people hate Cars so much.  I think it's a great movie and for me, Ratatouille is the worst Pixar movie.  I have watched that movie two times and have not finished it each time since it was so bland.

Been waiting for the Incredibles to come on blu-ray.  For sure my favorite Pixar movie.

PenguinDuston April 12, 2011 at 10:02 a.m.
I don't think Cars is the worst Pixar movie.  I disliked Ratatouille  and  Finding Nemo more, but I admit I am probably in the minority on that, especially Nemo which people seem to adore for some reason.  Either way, the worst of them are better than most of the Dreamworks stuff.  Also I agree with @skrutop: in that I don't understand the reverence people have for UP.  It was okay but there were much better movies made from Pixar including the new Incredibles BD.

Other than that, woo-hoo! H.R. Pufnstuf out on DVD/BD?  Man, that trip takes me back.  It was among the weirdest shows, but not much more than The New Zoo Review or Sigmund and the Sea Monsters.  They need to put The Great Space Coaster out, too.

oddjobon April 12, 2011 at 10:08 a.m.
Yeah, I gotta agree with @skrutop, A Bug's Life doesn't really hold up anymore.

I was surprised I like Cars, with my hate of all things NASCAR, and anything the History Channel has come up with the past few years. Cars 2 is being made solely to appeal to that crowd, which, I suspect, was more of a Disney business decision rather than a Pixar creative one.
Upfishon April 12, 2011 at 10:19 a.m.
If you guys have the DVDs for The Incredibles and Cars, there's a couple Disney Rewards coupons for upgrading to Blu-Ray. Couple that with Best Buy taking off another $10 for buying both movies together and it's basically a buy one get one free. The Incredibles is my favorite Pixar and Cars is my least favorite (although I haven't seen A Bug's Life in probably 10 years), but I picked up both today.
President_Barackbaron April 12, 2011 at 10:51 a.m.
@oddjob:@skrutop:  I don't really think A Bug's Life is their worst, but its certainly the Cars of early era Pixar (as in, not nearly as good as the other stuff they came out with during that time).

Well ill buy the dvd copy of HP7p1 and make sure I get the blu ray super duper deluxe edition when that comes out during Christmas time
teh_destroyeron April 12, 2011 at 11:36 a.m.
Does this mean that I will see ManvsWild season 5 on instant streaming soon?
CrimsonAvengeron April 12, 2011 at 11:42 a.m.
I've been waiting for The Incredibles on blu-ray, as for Cars I wish Pixar never made it though its still far more entertaining than Finding Nemo. Still what moron would buy HP7P1 when a box set of all of the movies will be coming out in the near future?
Hailinelon April 12, 2011 at 11:57 a.m.
Is it really fair to call Cars a classic?
Duck44on April 12, 2011 at 12:05 p.m.
Cars and Wall*E are probably my least favourite....Up and Finding Nemo would be my faves. Since The Incredibles has been on my list of shame for awhile, now is the perfect time to finally watch it....
skrutopon April 12, 2011 at 12:30 p.m.
@PenguinDust:   Yeah, I thought Finding Nemo was just okay.  I liked Ratatouille, but I never need to see it again.  Wow, this topic really reminds me just how many movies Pixar has made.

Unfortunately, the only Pixar movie my wife doesn't like is The Incredibles, which is like one of the best movies ever.  She has a problem with the tone that the wife is left to run the household while the husband sneaks out and gets to live his superhero life, then she gets dragged into everything and it's all hunky-dory.  I get her point, but man it is such a great movie and I don't ever watch it anymore.

What a horrible week for DVDs.
Xpgamer7on April 12, 2011 at 6:16 p.m.
For me Up is the worst, I just didn't see the charm past the beginning. I agree cars wasn't that great but it's a pretty good film as standards go. Anyway we've got Marwencol which looks interesting at least.
