DVD/Blu-Ray Releases!

MOVIES!

I admit it: I jumped a lot during this movie.
I admit it: I jumped a lot during this movie.
Another week, another batch of fresh movies for your Blu-Ray collection. While the biggest box-office of any of these films is Dinner With Schmucks, by far, there are some better films to be found a skoosh down the list. Also of note is an Oscar cash-in from Warner Home Video as they re-release a number of their Academy Award-nominated films, such as The Matrix, L.A. Confidential, Gone With The Wind, The Wizard of Oz, and The Blind Side in shiny gold packages. But let's take a look at the full list, shall we?

1. Dinner for Schmucks

Based on the magnificently awkward French farce The Dinner Game, Dinner for Schmucks is another one of those completely average comedies that people still give $80 million to.

2. The Last Exorcism

Now, if you're looking for a rental, I thoroughly recommend watching this in a dark room. Is it a classic horror film? No, not really, but it's well-made and throws some good scares at you.

3. Machete

How Robert Rodriguez manages to get these movies made at $10 million budgets is beyond me, but more power to him.

4. Case 39

You know, I might wind up watching this just to see how bad it is. It certainly looked horrible, but it was the same director as the perfectly OK Pandorum, so maybe...maybe?

5. Catfish

I wasn't a huge fan of this, honestly, but that might've been a result of the presentation: it's difficult to watch a micro-budget, shot-on-handicam documentary on the big screen of a theater. Maybe it'll feel more intimate on DVD, though.

6. Howl

Everyone says that James Franco is excellent as Allen Ginsberg in this good-but-not-great biopic. That alone will probably be enough for it to be a success on DVD; people love them some Franco.

7. Blade Runner

THE FINAL CUT! Again! This hit Blu-ray in 2007, but now it's apparently back in a new box. No word on new features, but it seems unlikely that there's any real new content in here.

8. Touching Home

It seems like there might be a rather remarkable story behind the making of this, as first-time filmmakers Logan and Noah Miller decided to make a movie about the life and death of their homeless father, and somehow managed to get Ed Harris to star in it after "finding him in a San Francisco alley".

9. The Yellow Handkerchief

This remake of a 70's Japanese film is apparently an actor's showcase, with William Hurt, Kristen Stewart, and Maria Bello along for the ride.

10. Gun

I feel dumber just from watching the trailer for this.

11. Big Love

In TV releases, we have: Big Love: The Complete Fourth Season, Mannix: Fourth Season, Make It Or Break It: Season One, Volume Two, iCarly: Season One, Volume Two, The Real Housewives of New Jersey: Season 2, The Real Housewives of Orange County: Season 3, The Ricky Gervais Show: Complete First Season, Rocky & Bullwinkle & Friends: The Complete Series, The Sarah Jane Adventures: Season Three, Top Chef D.C.: The Complete Season 7, and Battlestar Galactica: Season Four (Blu-Ray).

12. Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery

Older films coming to Blu-Ray (in new editions, in some cases) include Goldmember, The Spy Who Shagged Me, Backdraft, The Blind Side, Coraline (3D Blu-Ray), Devil's Rejects/House of 1,000 Corpses Two-Pack, El Mariachi/Desperado Two-Pack, Ever After, Gone With The Wind, Hope Floats, JFK, L.A. Confidential, The Matrix, My Dog Skip, Once Upon A Time In Mexico, A Walk In The Clouds, The Wizard Of Oz, and Good Neighbor Sam

Man, I was really hoping "Gun" was a new Uwe Boll movie "based" on the video game. I'm sure it will still be terrible though.

A movie based on the video game Gun actually would be kind of cool, if done properly.

Screw Bladerunner for having so many releases... I already have a 5 disc edition on Blu-ray, what the hell?!

I'll get Catfish if it gets cheap enough, until then I am waiting for next week when The Social Network comes out.

Dinner With Schmucks.  Hopefully better than Dinner for Schmucks.

@Christina:  I think you'll dig it! It's a creepy movie. Again, though, pitch-black room required.

@Rorie: If I can't sleep for a week after I am blaming you completely!

Last Exorcism is probably not worth a buy (because it will not hold up after repeat viewings) but it's totally awesome. Visceral and scary with some excellent performances.

Dinner for Schmucks is the PG-13 version of Due Date- a film with a strong cast and crew that ends up becoming completely average. It's not bad- I laughed a few times- but there are much funnier comedies out there. Even Date Night had a bigger laugh ratio.

Is there like a site where they list if a movie has jump scares and if so, at what time(s)? Because I would like to bookmark it for the times I want to watch movies like The Last Exorcism. I am not a fan of those.

Not that I know of but from what I remember of the film, Last Exorcism's Jump scares mostly take place in the last third of the film, specifically the scene where Nell (the girl with the demon inside her) picks up the camera. So I guess watch that part without sound.

The last time Blade Runner was released on blu-ray it was a five disk set that included five different cuts of the movie. This release is just the Final Cut.

When sushi becomes art as much as it is food, the art of presenting it on film becomes transformative not only to the cuisine, but the people who make it.
