Slightly less successful were Stone, Buried, and Animal Kingdom, all in that $1-2 million dollar box-office range, which has to especially hurt for Stone, with a reported $22 million budget. Speaking of Stone, have I talked about Emma Stone lately? Did you know that her smile has been classified as a Schedule II Narcotic by the DEA, and when she kissed an old man in China he knew, in that moment, the ways of the Buddha? She was really, really good in a not-so-good movie, Paper Man, which is coming to DVD after eight months or so. I can't recommend it (actually, I didn't recommend it), but if you rent it you can always skip past all of the Jeff Daniels bits. And maybe slow down her parts a bit so they don't go by so fast. That's my plan, anyway.
Read on for the rest of the list!
| | 1. Takers To everyone's chagrin, this movie somehow managed to make almost $60 million at the box office. Can Takers 2 be far behind? Probably not. |
| | 2. Stone I have to admit that this De Niro/Ed Norton teamup actually looks like it might've made a positive impression on me had I seen it before slamming De Niro last week. I've heard pretty up and down things about this one, but it looked like the performances were OK. |
| | 3. Buried I'm not sure if this is entirely new to Blu-Ray and DVD, but either way, it's out in a new edition today. Worth a look if you haven't caught it yet; you can check my review here. |
| | 4. Animal Kingdom I haven't seen this yet, but it's got some apparently amazing performances. I'll put it on the Netflix shortlist, assuming it doesn't appear on Streaming soon enough. |
| | 5. The Virginity Hit The sex comedy that featured a young man attempting to broadcast himself losing his virginity to a bunch of friends in the next room, without the knowledge of the young lady involved. Delightful. It seems like a lot of comedies these days feature absolute sleazeballs as their stars. |
| | 6. Jack Goes Boating Jack goes anywhere but to see this movie, apparently, as it only made around half a million dollars. I like P.S. Hoffmann, but probably not enough to see him make out with Amy Ryan. |
| | 7. Break Ke Baad A Bollywood look at the gritty world of small-town meth labs? No, silly, it's actually a look at a woman who has to give up her dreams to support the man she loves. Yay Bollywood! |
| | 8. Lebanon The shot-entirely-inside-a-tank film that everyone seems to have raved about. Definitely worth a look-see! |
| | 9. Freakonomics Film adaptation of the wonderfully controversial book series of the same name. |
| | 10. Eichmann A look at the last moments of Eichmann before he's executed. So I'm guessing it's a comedy? |
| | 11. Army of Crime An apparently great look at "the real Inglorious Basterds", a group of foreign-born resistance fighters who engaged in guerrilla tactics to fight the Nazis in WWII France. So...not a comedy? |
| | 12. Paper Man I didn't particularly care for this movie, but I do particularly care for Miss Emma Stone, who's ridiculously cute in it. I take pride in having contributed almost 1% of this film's $13,000 total domestic box office. Unless I'm mistaken, that means I'm allowed to go on a date with Miss Emma Stone, correct? I'm basically a shareholder in her career now, after all. |
| | 13. Neshoba: The Price Of Freedom Looks like this has won Best Documentary at a bunch of film festivals; it tells the story of a KKK murder of three young civil rights workers in the 60s and the indictment of the killers 40 years later. |
| | 14. El Superstar: The Unlikely Rise of Juan Frances A mockumentary about a white dude who thinks he's a Mexican folk singer. Or something. There are like 20 movies on this list and I don't have time to read every single description, ok? OK. |
| | 15. Fire on the Amazon A movie that was shelved for almost four years before its eventual release in 1993. Also features a semi-nude scene of one Sandra Bullock, who reportedly covered up her boobs with duct tape to ensure that she wouldn't wind up on what would eventually become Mr. Skin. That's foresight. |
| | 16. The Naked Kiss A two-pack of Samuel Fuller films from The Criterion Collection, with Shock Corridor also hitting DVD/Blu-Ray today. With these titles, how could they be anything but amazing? |
| | 17. Death Race 2 A direct-to-DVD prequel of the remake. Someone spent money to make this movie. |
| | 18. Justified The first season of one of last season's best shows arrives, alongside Dark Skies: The Complete Series, Dallas: Season 14, 21 Jump Street: Season Four, Hey Vern, It's Earnest!: The Complete Series, Merlin: The Complete Second Season, and Waking The Dead: Season Five. |

Gonna check out The Virginity Hit, because I liked the trailer and didn't realise it had come out.
Two solitary confinement movies in one week (Buried, Lebanon)?! I love those kind of movies, to see how creative the filmmakers must be to make these experimental movies interesting for the whole running time.
Rorie, may I ask how old you are? Because if you are any older than 30, then your obsession with the lovely Mrs. Stone is slightly terrifying.
Otherwise, pretty cruddy week for releases to be honest. Except maybe Buried and Lebanon
Did y'all see blond Emma Stone on Golden Globes?
1) she looked completely unrecognizable 2) fuck mannnn, she looked like Lindsay Lohan. Coked up mug shot Lindsay Lohan. ha HAA take it you Emma Stone lovers take it!!! ;;;)
