Emmy Nominations Continue Trend of Highlighting White People Being Dicks

Mad Men, Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire lead drama categories, while 30 Rock and Modern Family take the most comedy noms.

A Lannister always gets his Emmy.
A Lannister always gets his Emmy.

The Prime Time Emmy nominations hit this morning, and in keeping with the award show's grand tradition of making sure white people problems are thoroughly recognized, white people problems were thoroughly recognized.

The most drama nominations went to expected places, most notable among them being HBO's thoroughly heralded and totally way better than anything else on TV fantasy series, Game of Thrones, which picked up nods for Best Drama Series, and Best Supporting Drama Series Actor for Peter Dinklage. HBO also grabbed some nominations for Boardwalk Empire, including another Best Drama Series nod, and a best actor nod for Steve Buscemi.

Mad Men cleaned up in typical fashion (Best Drama, Best Drama Actor, Best Drama Actress, Best Drama Supporting Actor), as did Justified (Best Drama Actor for Timothy Olyphant, Best Supporting Drama Actor for Walton Goggins, and Best Supporting Drama Actress for Margo Martindale--much deserved), and Dexter, which always seems to garner a million nominations despite not necessarily being one of the best dramas on TV these days. Perhaps as sort of a conciliatory send-off, Friday Night Lights also received a few different nominations across the board, joining The Good Wife as the only Network series to get Best Drama Series nominations.

On the comedy front, all the usual suspects got their usual nominations. Glee cleaned up, as did Modern Family (practically every series regular got an acting nod), The Big Bang Theory, 30 Rock, and The Office.

Only a few major snubs appeared on the list, though they weren't insignificant ones. Community, despite regularly being NBC's best comedy series, got shut out completely, which gives me hope that Dan Harmon, alongside his cast, will pull a Nathaniel Hornblower and crash the acceptance speech of whoever wins best Comedy Series. FX's routinely amazing comedy series Louie also avoided nearly every nomination, save for a Best Comedy Actor nomination for Louis C.K. himself. Shockingly, Charlie Sheen did not receive a nomination for his groundbreaking work on Two and a Half Men.

Some of the Dramatic acting categories also left a few heads scratching. Buscemi's nomination for Boardwalk Empire makes a bit of sense, but no nomination for the superior Michael Shannon is pretty weak. Likewise, no nomination for Sean Bean for his work on Game of Thrones is a real bummer. That cast is humongous, and Dinklage's nomination is fully deserved, but doesn't poor Ned Stark deserve a little recognition too? And come on, can Justified please get recognized as one of the absolute best dramas on TV? Please? Pretty please?

You can see the full list of main category nominations below. I stuck to the main categories, but you can see the absurdly long full list over at the main Emmys website.

Outside of Community getting shot out, and the Killing get nominated for things, I'm pleasently surprised and happy with the nominations, and positively stunned that they actually nominated Walton Goggins. Now if we could just John Noble to be nominated for Fringe we'd be set.

Now let's pump the brakes right here and now: Breaking Bad hasn't premiered yet. And it will demolish any other TV this year. Is that show so good it's getting it's own Emmy's ceremony?

Rowen545on July 14, 2011 at 7:52 a.m.
Agree with you on the Dexter sentiment.

"And come on, can Justified please get recognized as one of the absolute best dramas on TV? Please? Pretty please?"

Not while Breaking Bad exists.
positronon July 14, 2011 at 7:58 a.m.

Not having Louie in there for best comedy series is bullshit.

Walton Goggins getting nominated makes me so happy. I love a Lanister, but come on. Goggins should win.
Blackout62on July 14, 2011 at 8:02 a.m.

@Martin_Blank: Damn you Hal!

Also *Slams down wallet full of small bills* All of it on The Dink.

RockinKemosabeon July 14, 2011 at 8:03 a.m.

Ugh, another bad year for Community. But the fact that Danny Pudi wasn't nominated is a fucking crime.

DonChipotleon July 14, 2011 at 8:04 a.m.

I haven't watched Game of Thrones because I don't care for fantasy but I fully support Peter Dinklage getting a win. That guy is awesome.

dougmansionon July 14, 2011 at 8:07 a.m.
No love for Community? The Acadamy is clearly streets behind.
ryanwhoon July 14, 2011 at 8:07 a.m.
If white people being dicks was the trend, Community wouldnt have been shafted again this year. Which seems especially weird considering they recognized Louie, so I can't say they simply have poor taste. Just fickle and random taste. And also, considering how many people won't be coming back to Game of Thrones next year it would have been nice for some of those dudes to get their propers. You have 3 more seasons to give awards to Peter.
Chrometechon July 14, 2011 at 8:09 a.m.

I am glad that No Reservations got some nods. I love that show. The Cuba episode on Monday was great.

No Community? What the hell?
