Ferrell to Carell - - The Office Gets A Temporary New Boss

It's just that old fan-to-star Cinderella story...

"You wanna take the wheel, Will?"
"You wanna take the wheel, Will?"

They’re just pulling out all the stops for Steve Carell’s farewell from the Office. Ricky Gervais is finally going to guest and, now,   Deadline says that no less than Will Ferrell will step in to serve as something of a regent ad interim. In a four-part arc, he’ll be introduced as a branch manager who’s “just as inappropriate as… Michael Scott” before showing up in at least one episode of Season 8 to “bridge” the as-of-yet unspecified cast transition.

The thing about the fandom of a show like the Office is that it covers a broad swath. I’m sure there’s at least one fan film out there made by some people who’d kill to be on the show (and you know there has to be a XXX porn parody or two.) Ferrell, believe it or not, is actually like one of those people - -  except his reach actually aligns pretty well with his grasp. Apparently, he just called the producers and asked to be on the show because he liked it and wanted to give his buddy a proper send-out.

Paul Lieberstein, who plays Toby on the show, sums this up pretty well. Like practically half the cast, he also actually works behind the scenes of the show (as an exec producer.)

“We found Steve Carell when he was nothing but a movie star and we turned him into a television star… We are proud to continue  The Office’s tradition of discovering famous talent, and we hope that once America gets a good look at Will, they’ll see what we see, tremendous raw sexuality.

I'm not much of a fan of Ferrell's usual schtick, but I've actually liked him better when he plays it understated and that's what this show is all about. So color me intrigued to see how he fits into Dunder-Mifflin's milieu...

I'm still really curious as to where the show goes after the Steve Carell departure. Michael Scott is, for all intents and purposes, the whole show. Sure, there are lots of other great actors on that show, but Carell really is the main event.

Completely agree, although I do think Will Ferrel kind of fits into this show well, so at least that should be amusing.

I'm pretty sure there IS a porn parody of The Office. I haven't had the luxury of seeing it, though.

It could ONLY be called: "The  Orifice "

I just hope that Ferrell won't be like Timothy Olyphant, just being there as a guest star and isn't interesting.

I actually had a conversation with my dad a few months ago about who could replace Steve Carell, and Will Ferell was pretty much the only person we could come up with.
Him and Will Arnett, although my dad wasn't entirely sure on who Will Arnett was.

Saw Rainn Wilson tweet about this last night, I kinda just thought it'd be Idris Elba but Farrell works for me.

I'm hit and miss with Will Ferrell.  However, it will indeed be interesting enough to see him do a turn in The Office.

I still think this show is as good as dead once Carell leaves. Any sort of TV series where the main character leaves never lasts very long (Anyone remember the last season of That 70s Show?)

I can't even look at Will Ferrell and not laugh.  I'm excited.

I'll be very interested if he does his understated, Stranger Than Fiction-styled persona.  Having him do his Ron Burgundy schtick would be a bit much to me.

I expect there will be a lot of yelling while Ferrell is on board.

I haven't watched the office in years, maybe only a few times since the writers strike. I saw the episode with J&P; having the baby. But can someone fill me in as to why Steve is leaving the show? Is it on the verge of cancellation and this is a network retool thing? And how are they dealing with it in the plot?
