Now if someone could just cast out Brendan Fraser like this.
Remember
Schwarzenegger's Hamlet and how funny it seemed at the time? I think someone took the wrong lesson from it, as
Variety is reporting that
Alex Proyas has signed on to direct a version of Milton's Paradise Lost, an epic poem describing the fall of Man and Lucifer's desire to corrupt God's creation. Will it be a sensitive treatment of what is acknowledged to be among the most beautiful works in the English language? Fuck no! Variety says the project "will be crafted as an action vehicle that will include aerial warfare, possibly shot in 3D."
After EA's
Dante's Inferno, I suppose it's no surprise that someone would want to tap more epic poetry for big, dumb entertainment projects, and I have to say that the thought of a huge battle between angels and demons might make for some interesting visuals, but still - ugh. Whatever happened to the Alex Proyas I used to know? You made
The Crow and
Dark City, but then you went on to make
I, Robot and
Knowing. The dude's early work clearly display imagination; someone needs to inject him with some Aronofsky juice so that we might see some of that again.
But so did Clash of the Titans :/

I only got like, halfway through Paradise Lost (and I intend to finish it!), but I have to admit, a 3D action movie sounds about right. Granted, most of the visuals are "beyond mortal comprehension" etc, but when they're not talking, they're doing insane fucking shit in insane fucking places. And most of the talking is just describing said shit. Like, honestly, the only way it could be done is with an Avatar level of CGI, and at that point, why not do 3D?
That is all I have to say.
I also liked Knowing because my mind has erased the bad parts and leaves nothing but a taut, interesting thriller.
This will be CRAP. I think I'd rather have Schwarzenneggar in Hamlet.
