Furries Rejoice! Trailer for New Thundercats Show Is Here

Amer-ime relaunch of the classic 80's cartoon looks hyper serious. Snarf.

Nostalgia's a hell of a drug. Especially 80's nostalgia, which has been mined more thoroughly than a West Virginia mountaintop over the past 10 years or so. But one of the last big nostalgic properties that has yet to be brought back is the classic toon, Thundercats. (The other overlooked 80's gem is clearly *batteries not included, for those keeping score.)

But the wait is almost over, cat lovers! We've finally got a first glimpse at the relaunched series, and man, for a show about swashbuckling kitty cats in loincloths goofing on mummies, it sure looks like it takes itself very seriously. I can see the reasoning, though. How many times have you gone back to a cartoon you loved as a little kid only to realize how godawful and cheesy it was? Because, if you haven't, I have news for you: all of them were. Laser bars... So, sure, modernize it, dramatize it, don't criticize it.

What do you guys think about this trailer? It doesn't give us any dialogue to chew on, but it definitely showcases a range of interesting visuals. I can only hope it elicits another amazing expletive-ridden outtake reel by the end of its run.

Furry jokes aside, this looks like it might be pretty decent. I might actually DVR an episode to see how it is. I don't have any nostalgia for Thundercats (I never really go into the show) but the art style intrigues me.

It looks a lot better than I ever thought it would be. The character designs are nice (Lion-O still excluded, but he does look better in motion than the image we saw earlier) and the design of the world looks good too. Its Studio 4C so at least the animation is bound to be good throughout the series. Trying to rewatch Thundercats is kind of a painful experience. While some 80s and early 90s cartoons are still watchable and in same cases still fun, Thundercats is just bad.

This looks OK, hopefully it's not as dumb as the original.

No Mumm-ra the Everliving?

Fantastic, another non-anime cartoon being redone as if it was as Japanese as Akira. There are other animation styles to emulate guys, most of them are even better than the Japanese one, unless you love ellipses and painting giant teardrops on people's foreheads to denote angst.

The original Thundercats was animated in Japan, and this doesn't look like anime. It looks like the pointy style Saturday morning American cartoon style that's been around since Batman the animated series.

@korsair_13: There is no such thing as an "anime style" Japanese animation encompasses a number of different animation techniques. Anyone that believes there is such a thing as an all encompassing "anime style" is a fool and needs to do some research.

Erg great more Japanime.....I get it not actually animating anything costs less money and the corporate overlords love that, but geeze it makes your cartoons looks so generic and boring. Are there anymore cartoons from our childhoods that haven't had an anime remake and failed yet?...nothing from marvel at this point thats for sure.

Looks cool to me but it seems that Panthro is missing.

Looks great so far.
  Amazing.

Looks kind of cool.  Why shouldn't a cartoon take itself seriously or are we Westerners so closed minded that the concept is unfathomable?  The anti-anime sentiment confounds me because this really doesn't look like any other American cartoon currently on TV today, so how it could be generic is beyond me.  The new G.I. Joe, the new Transformers, the current Young Justice and Avengers all have different looks than this, so I believe it's good that this is continuing that trend.  I hope the series is very episodic in that there is a long story arc developed over the course of the show.  Sym-Bionic Titan, another action show that looks nothing like this, has that in a more subdued sense.

Looks pretty good. As has been mentioned, all of Rankin Bass's non-stop-motion animation was done in Japan (this includes The Hobbit and the Return of the King in addition to the original Thundercats), so this doesn't feel out of place here. Also, I did notice a brief flash of Mumm-ra, very briefly (almost subliminally), so he'll probably make an appearance later, after the first arc.
Also, did the cat-guy with the huge beard remind anyone else of Guan Yu?

Knowing that some of the people making this are responsible for the   Avatar: The Last Airbender show i'm super interested in this Thundercats remake. It could be amazing.
CrimsonAvengeron March 2, 2011 at 11:44 a.m.
It looks good, I'm liking the new Lion-O look because the bathing suit look was just awful.
CharAznableon March 2, 2011 at 11:47 a.m.
Color me mildly intrigued. I'll check out an episode or two for nostalgia's sake.

This was my favorite show when I was a kid and I can't stop having a grin on my face right now :D
Bones8677on March 2, 2011 at 12:18 p.m.
Thundercats is a cold franchise. Kids today know nothing about it, and the adults who grew up with it, may not be interested in a remake. But I have to say, this doesn't look half bad.

MUM-RA!!!

Cheetara looks like she's been rode hard and put up wet.

I'll be more interested in it when I know what the voices are like, if Snarf has an annoying voice like the original than I'm out.
