Maybe the Golden Globes aren't the top tier of awards thanks to rumors of bribery and nomination manipulation. But they are the first award show out of the gate and help set the tone for the films and TV shows looking to garner more award recognition.
While I haven't seen every show and every film nominated I will lay out some of my predictions for this Sunday's airing. Feel free to add your own predictions at the bottom for the same categories as me and the person who is the closest will be sent something awesome!
For a reminder of what the nominees are check out our story from late last year.
Best Motion Picture, Drama - 12 Years a Slave
While I still need to go out and see 12 Years a Slave nothing stands out during award shows like issues of race, especially those from our own past. That isn't to say that's all 12 Years a Slave is about and without another true standout to compete against it this should be a well deserved win.
Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy - Her
I don't agree that Her is a comedy or musical but placing it in this category all but ensures its victory. Inside Llewyn Davis is a close second but Her has commercials everywhere and a lot of buzz. Buzz is usually shorthand for probable winner.
Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama - Chiwetel Ejiofor, 12 Years a Slave
There is almost always one film that really runs away with the awards. While I think Robert Redford may get the nod thanks to years of being a great actor but Ejiofor has been just short of a lock-in for this award for months now.
All Bale really needs to do is some major weight management, down for The Fighter and way up for American Hustle, and star in a David O. Russel to win this award. He sinks deep into his role in a way DiCaprio just quite doesn't, in my opinion, in The Wolf Of Wall Street.
A very difficult category to consider with so many great actresses jammed into it. Bullock only had one actor to play off of and he wasn't there for the entire film. She, and the cinematography, were the only things keeping Gravity together and that's saying something since Gravity is one of the best of 2013.
Out of all these films I've only seen one. Frances Ha came out in wide release way back in May of 2013 and yet still gets a good deal of attention. That normally doesn't happen with any film so it must be for some reason.
Best Director - Alfonso Cuarón, Gravity
For my money Cuaron did something incredible with Gravity. He has vision to see what could be created with two actors, a lot of green screen, and not have it be the next Star Wars.
Best TV Series, Drama - Breaking Bad
A lot of shows have to wait until they're winding down, usually with a drop in quality, before award shows begin to recognize their worth. Breaking Bad didn't need that time to be considered great but now that it's gone this is the last chance to give it's due.
Best TV Series, Comedy or Musical - Girls
HBO always gets something. Girls has been controversial and the subject of a lot of debates but no one has ever said it wasn't funny. No one makes a show like HBO and no one solicits for an award like HBO.
Best Actor in a TV Series, Drama - Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad
It's hard to mess with the best. Cranston transformed his career from comedy sitcom dad to premiere dramatic actor. Walter White's transformation was a treat, albeit a dark one, to watch and he more than deserves this award.
Cheadle may the right choice but the popular choice is Parsons. He won the award back in 2011 and Big Bang Theory is somehow a bigger behemoth than it was before. Whatever you may think of the show Parsons has crafted a cultural icon of a character and that's nothing to ignore.
This may not be the actual winner but I think it's the right choice. Wright is the backbone of House of Cards holding the entire sense of the show up so Kevin Spacey can really shine. I can't wait for season 2 and I hope this show doesn't get completely shut out.
HBO is still HBO. Veep is still considered one of the best comedies on TV and with my prediction that Girls will be the Best TV Comedy I imagine they'll spread this one out to some other HBO hits.
