If there were an award to be given for “most innocuous” cartoon (not a strip--it isn’t sequential,) you’d be stumped to think of anything more deserving than The Family Circus. Frequent child nudity gags aside, it’s so harmless, it makes a declawed kitten rolled in bubble wrap look edgy. My exposure to the ‘toon’s limited to casual skimming of some digest collections during slow summer days at my grandparents’. They kept it next to a jar of hard candy--and I suppose that's the most appropriate association you can have for this toon.
Anyway, Deadline says that Fox and Walden Media (of the Narnia movies) have forged an alliance and acquired the Family Circus' movie rights. Call me a hopeless optimistic, but I pray they’ll use real kids instead of Marmaduke-style CG creatures--because that'd just too damn surreal.
Judging by the response this announcement's already been getting, it seems that there are a lot of people out there with strong opinions about what goes into their copies of Parade. Me? I figure an evil Randy Quaid's endorsement should be good enough for anybody.
