HBO Releases a New Game of Thrones Preview

Three minutes of high fantasy awesomeness and George R. R. Martin's beard.

As much as I adore HBO's original programming, I have to admit I've periodically considered canceling my subscription of late. Shows like Treme and Boardwalk Empire and In Treatment are certainly great, but they haven't given me that feeling of "must watch" that networks like FX and AMC have managed with some of their recent series.

HBO's upcoming adaptation of Game of Thrones might finally get me back in the swing of things. This new preview video gives you a pretty good look at the visual translation of George R. R. Martin's epic fantasy series--not to mention George R. R. Martin's current occupation as boat captain of the S. S. Nerdlinger. Seriously, that dude is a corn cob pipe away from a profession as Maine's foremost rocking chair enthusiast and dispenser of travel directions that entirely consist of, "Sorry, cahn't get there from heaaahhh."

Martin's sea faring-ness aside, the video is excellent, and contains some good-looking action. It does make me wonder if we'll ever see Sean Bean in a movie in which he is allowed to carry a gun and wear jeans again, but hey, the guy has found his niche. No sense in abandoning it.

And if this video just makes you sad that Martin seems resolute to never, ever finish his book series, let this be a lesson to you: Never start reading any book franchise by a living author. If you know they're dead, and you know they can't write any more entries in the series, then you'll never be disappointed.

So long as there is plenty of Jon and Ghost bitchin' it up at the wall, Ill be happy.

Seriously though, this is shaping up damn nicely.

I'd say it is already clear that he is a sea captain.  He certainly is writing anything pertaining to the Song of Ice and Fire series.

Looks really good...it seems to be shaping up to be very similar (at least visually, from my prospective) to what the books portray.

Since I won't be getting another book anytime soon, I'm excited for this.

Show so far as exceeded my expectations by far, and on a side note looks like the first HBO series where the best written (and possibly best acted) character is a little person. Hope Dinklage gets more dramatic roles in the future, he deserves it.

The thing with Martin is he has so many other projects he keeps announcing, whether short stories in collections he is editing, or episodes of the show he is writing, or rooting for the Jets. For Stephen King, it took getting run over by a van to get him in gear and finish his series off. I hope it doesn't take anything like that to get Martin in gear. Speaking of, King is a year older than Martin, but looking at the pair, you would never think that.

I think im way too hyped for this show,
Im afraid  I will be disappointed.

The advancement of TV might force Martin at least to but together the story and an end even if he doesn't actually write the full book(s).  Or HBO might allow them a Sopranos type schedule and the 5th season won't happen until 2019.

Enjoying the look, and definitely looking forward to this.  Doesn't look like they have cut any corners, but they haven't shown any of the wolves yet, I'll be curious to see if they are shown as larger than big dog size.

I'm extremely happy with how it looks, I spotted a couple of direct scenes from the book. I'm interested though in what the deal is with the title. Will the other seasons be called Game of Thrones and it's just season 2, or?

Damn it George stop talking to the camera and finish your goddamn book already.

They are still writing Robert Jordan and Frank Herbert books years after they snuffed it.   They get the nephew in to "co-author" or claim the plot is based off of an actual post-it note they found clearing out the late authors desk.

I'm going to end up buying this series, aren't I?

EDIT: The show that is... in physical form. I already own the books.

If this ends up being awesome and HBO prematurely pulls the plug like they did on Rome, I'm going to be PISSED.

Looks interesting. I have the first book and never really got into it. I may have to give it another shot.

hahaha Good advice about book series. It's disheartening as Martin's Ice and Fire series is probably in my top ten favorite books and possibly my favorite book series ever.  I feel bad for hooking my friends and family on it. I'm currently reading an author who, although still living, FINISHED his ten-volume series already. I was excited for this HBO thing but now I don't know if I want to watch it. Not sure I want to get interested in that world again when there might never be any payoff.

So Sean Bean's name is 'Ned'?

Yipes...

Wasn't that last Wheel of Time book actually mostly by Jordan?
