The story is loosely based on the real life events that led a UCSD grad student to become obsessed with the Greek myth of Orestes and kill his own mother with an antique saber. He also happened to be playing the lead role of Orestes at the time in a production at the university. It stars Michael Shannon as the lead, supported by Willem Dafoe, Brad Dourif, and Chloe Sevigny.
But the film has not made it to Boston, with no word coming on if it will. This morning Comingsoon broke the news that it will be getting a DVD (nothing said about Blu-Ray yet) release on September 14, 2010. There will be the usual extras on the disc, including commentary with Herzog and behind the scenes footage. Also included is a short existential film by Ramin Bahrani called Plastic Bag, which traces the epic journey of a bag, narrated by Herzog. You can actually check that short out here if you're interested.
While I still want to be able to catch this on the big screen, I'm excited for it any way I can get it.
