So it's Thursday and nothing of huge import seems to be happening in the world of film and television. We're waiting on some new trailers to arrive without watermarks, and I'm working on a script for the next edition of Sidegrades, but in the meantime, here's a few bullet points of news that might be of interest to you:
- That image up there is your first look at the cast of Tim Burton's Dark Shadows, his latest team-up with Johnny Depp, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly. In the words of a commenter at Latino Review: Wait, hold on, Johnny Depp is playing a pale weirdo in a Tim Burton movie?!?!?!?! *HEAD EXPLODES FROM SHOCK*
- Elton John is preparing a biographical film based on his own life. Who would you want to star? Zac Efron? Justin Timberlake? Neil Patrick Harris?
- Marvel Studios might be close to signing Patty Jenkins, director of Monster and the pilot of the U.S. version of The Killing, to the director's chair for Thor 2. It would be her first film in eight years, and only her third film ever. Thinkin' outside the box.
- Did you think the movie The Last Exorcism would actually be about the last last exorcism? Apparently not, as star Ashley Bell is close to signing on for a sequel. Color me relatively enthused: I thought TLE was a great little found-footage film, and I wouldn't mind seeing another one.
- Modern Family managed to beat out the much-hyped premiere of The X-Factor in the ratings last night.
Lastly, there's been a recurrent rumor floating around the last couple of days that the ending of The Dark Knight Rises might be done entirely in CGI, for some reason. I think that sounds ludicrous, given Nolan's well-known penchant for physical effects, and the fact that the supposed secrecy of the ending would be a bit harder to nail down if it was suddenly put in the hands of hundreds of computer effects artists. Supposedly, of the major cast, only Gary Oldman has been informed of how Nolan's trilogy will end. The rest of us will have to wait for next summer, I suppose.

See, I really want to believe in The Dark Knight Rises. On one hand, trilogies never end well. On the other hand, it's Christopher Nolan. I want to believe, and then I see things like those awful Bane pics from a few weeks back and now this rumor that the ending will be done entirely in CG.
Please, Nolan, PLEASE prove me wrong. Make an actual quality trilogy instead of a stellar beginning, even better second act and tolerable third act like everyone else seems to.
