Only days before the second season hits Netflix, their first big original programming hit in House of Cards has been renewed for a third season. This is the shows first renewal from Netflix after the original agreement for two, 13 episode, seasons. It isn't much of a surprise since House of Cards is probably one of their most watched original programs and has garnered the most critical attention including several Emmy and Golden Globe nominations/wins. Stars of the show Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright, who won a Golden Globe for her performance on the show, have both been signed on for the third season.
Netflix has outright stated they want House of Cards to be their flagship show and after only one season they must be very confident in the direction of this program. I can only assume from here on out we'll see a more original programming oriented Netflix especially if the second season is as well received as the first.
What Netflix needs to do next is lineup more shows quickly to coexist with House of Cards. Maybe their next slate of new shows, including that upcoming slew of Marvel shows, will help pad out their catalog.
