For those not in the loop, Giger is a surrealist painter and sculptor whom Ridley Scott tapped to create the iconic Alien in his 1979 film. In fact, Giger won the Academy Award for his effects work in the film. While he was not asked to participate in James Cameron's Aliens (which Cameron has apologized for), Giger did return for David Fincher's Alien3.
Giger's creativity was such a huge part of creating the Alien universe that it makes complete sense to get him back on board for the prequel. Despite how well known Giger has become over the years, his work in film has actually been quite minimal over the years. Apart from designing the Batman Forever Batmobile and the Sil alien from Species, there hasn't been too much for moviegoers to get their fix from. Here's hoping Scott lets him loose and create some original and unique work in the prequel.

I couldn't have said it better myself.
If you haven't seen Giger's work apart from Alien you might be shocked to learn that it basically looks like his entire body of work might as well have been made for Alien and potential sequels. It's basically all ready to just be slapped on the cover of a metal album and loot totally legit.
Amazing abstract artist too.
Having recently watched all 4 movies again, this time in beautiful 1080p on Blu-Ray I loved seeing all the behind the scenes especially when it came to him. His work on the third alien unfortunately didn't make it to the final movie which is a big disappointment because I found his super sexy female mouth for the alien really creepy. That's what I love about the design in general, so brilliant in the way it's meant to tap in to that sexual side of our being as well as the horrific side. A scary combination for sure.
Thanks so much for sharing that insightful letter! Gotta give it to Cameron to have the balls to try and create the (as he said), "...world I had seen in my mind as I wrote." And I think it's undeniable that his "abandonment" of the first films' style was crucial in making Aliens so uniquely great.
I'm a HUGE Giger fan, but I'm still skeptical of these new movies. I've been sort of getting the feeling that Ridley Scott lacks a clear vision, and is more-so trying to recreate 1979 in hopes of making lightening strike twice (and possibly thrice?). I hope I'm wrong!!!
And if there could be Giger involvement in a new Predator, I would rather have that than mindless action Predator even though the mostly straight man in me loved Brody in the last few 10-20 minutes of Predators.

We're not going to see a thinking man's movie like Alien again but damned if I'm not going to daydream about it! /wrists
this is great news for the film, it makes me even more curious to see what this is project is going to be like!
