Idris Elba's Getting Seriously Cross

He's replacing Morgan Freeman in this mystery novel reboot.

I know you didn't just say you were going to reboot me. How about a Morgan Freeman reboot up your ass?

Maybe you knew that Morgan Freeman played the same character in Kiss the Girls and Along Came A Spider, maybe you didn’t. They weren’t really presented under an impossible-to-miss Alex Cross banner. Anyway, Freeman’s character, psychologist investigator Alex Cross, is the hero of a series of thriller novels, much like Jack Ryan. And he’s getting a reboot, like all heroes get at the movies these days.

Deadline’s saying that Idris Elba will take over the role from Freeman in an adaption of the 12th book in James Patterson’s series, Cross (which noticeably breaks from his “menacing nursery rhyme” titling scheme.)  It sounds like they’re going to try to “inject some new blood” in the film franchise the way that The Sum of All Fears was supposed to do for Jack Ryan. Elba’s a fine actor. I’m sure he’ll do a good job. You all agree with me, right?

While we’re on the subject of literary franchises and Morgan Freeman, I think it’s worth noting that Freeman's said a few times that he’s always wanted to play Hannibal Lecter, but figured he'd never got the opportunity because overly-sensitive execs would be leery of having a black actor play such an evil villain. He didn't get to be too menacing in Wanted, but I'm sure he'd make a terrifying heel. Imagine him in Red Dragon.

I wonder who'll be the Ashley Judd or Monica Potter...

I would really really love to see Morgan Freeman play a villain, someone really dark.

I love me some Idris Elba. He participates in a lot of mediocre Tyler Perry projects, but he nailed his portrayal of Stringer Bell, helping to make him one of the most compelling characters in the history of television... he never did tell D'Angelo where the fuck Wallace was though.

I love me some Idris, so this is all good.

You know, off the top of my head I can't think of Freeman movie where he plays the "I'm smarter than you/5 steps ahead of you" bad guy, but damned if Freeman couldn't pull it off. Maybe he could play the villain in this 'Cross' reboot? That would be pretty wild and wacky.

I heard Eamonn Walker was supposed to be taking on this role. I love Elba but I feel like Walker is better for this part. Has a wiser, more worldy vibe about him.

I was just thinking about Alex Cross movies the other day and was wondering if they were planning on Freeman doing more. I think he did a great job as Cross.

However, I think Elba is the way to go for now and perhaps they can lock him into a multi-picture deal if the first movie goes well. After seeing him in the Office and then in The Losers, I would really like to see him in more roles.

Elba was seriously amazing in the last three episodes of his BBC series, Luther. Wasn't that interesting in the first half, but it got seriously good on the back side.
