If You've Just Gotta Go Crazy, Go Crazy 4 Cult

Going coo-coo for Cocoa Puffs is old hat, Crazy 4 Cult the new hotness.

Hey, man, what are you doing next Friday, July 9? Fifth wedding anniversary, really? Moonlight cruise? OK, shutup now, because I'm going to tell you what you're really doing next Friday: you're going to hop a plane to the West Coast, Los Angeles to be specific, and you're going to attend the opening of Crazy 4 Cult: 4, the art show for film lovers.

The now-annual event put on at Los Angeles' Gallery 1988 is a veritable Pharaoh's tomb of riches for art featuring or inspired by cult cinema. There will be well over a hundred artists' works on display, auctions, food, booze and the whole thing is hosted by Kevin Smith and producer Scott Mosier. You know, on second thought, it might be best to avoid this event for the sake of our fragile hearts.

If you're brave enough, though, here's the address followed by a small gallery of what preview works /Film's Peter Sciretta has collected from the net so far:

Gallery 1988 Los Angeles
7020 Melrose Avenue

Those Iron Giant and Gene Wilder paintings are absolutely phenomenal.

That Firefly picture is the most adorable thing I've seen in a few eons.
ashrielson July 2, 2010 at 12:09 p.m.
What is that a painting of?  The one with the person sitting on the stairway?

Also, I agree with the comment about the Gene Wilder painting.  That is hands down my favorite.

@ashriels: Mallrats, I believe.

Loved the Firefly, Jaws, Shaun of the Dead and the one with all those stupid 3D glasses. Would love to get a couple of them framed.

Barry Manilow's wardrobe now belongs to Tyler Durden.

I live in Los Angeles, but this, I think I can skip.

@samsaturday: Oh yes?  Even thought Scott C.'s Great Showdowns will be on display?  Look at happy Freddy and not laugh, I dare you!

Can I buy any of these?
Everyones_A_Criticon July 2, 2010 at 2:28 p.m.
Damn, those are really cool, particularly the Cuckoo's Nest one.

@Lena_P: Sure, it's cute. But I don't need to go see work by artists using pop culture as a way to "please-someone-pay-attention-to-me." I like art, and I like movies, but I don't need art to remind me that I like movies.

Every year the art work that comes out of Crazy 4 Cult dazzles me. Makes me wish I didn't live all the way in Australia.

@samsaturday:   It's a themed show.  The artists are going to create work to match the theme; it's not the end of personal expression.  I don't see why using films as a theme is any less valid than "Childhood's Remorse" or "Summer Memories" or any of the other hooks that galleries use to pull in customers and viewers.  Yeah, you can be cynical and write off the whole thing as a marketing ploy (which it is), but I always enjoy seeing how different people interpret the rules in their own ways.  The architect Hassan Fathy said that the greatest creativity is found when you work within limits, and you really see that when you go to these sorts of shows.  The differences in not just medium and technique but approach and interpretation really come through.

When sushi becomes art as much as it is food, the art of presenting it on film becomes transformative not only to the cuisine, but the people who make it.
