In Theaters: Ghost Rider Pisses Fire, Is Upset

Why do they call him a Ghost Rider, anyway? He's not even dead. Shouldn't it be something more like Demon Possessed Rider, or something?

I wish I was this cool. Someday, maybe I can be. Just gotta work on that whole "getting possessed" thing.
I wish I was this cool. Someday, maybe I can be. Just gotta work on that whole "getting possessed" thing.

It doesn't look like a particularly great film for movie-going. This Means War wasn't very good, Ghost Rider is flirting with a single-digit Rotten Tomatoes ranking, and Arrietty is pretty much the definition of an acquired taste. We'll have all three films reviewed by the end of the day.

In limited release, beyond the films listed below, here are a few entries that we don't have in our database, including the Chinese film Love, because holy mackeral, do you know how hard it is to search for a movie called Love? Also on the docket are Putin's Kiss, which I feel even mentioning might get me put on a kill list or something, something called Michael (again, difficult to search for), and the race-relations drama Deadline. Track 'em down! Or don't, no skin off my teeth.

1. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance

He pisses fire! Critical reaction to this is, predictably, pretty terrible, but here's hoping there are a few moments that might wind up entertaining an audience when this hits Blu-Ray in a few months. Because I doubt I'll be checking it out in theaters.

2. The Secret World of Arrietty

Charming and wonderfully-animated, but for a kid's movie, I can't help but think that this is going to bore the stuffing out of most children. Because children all have stuffing. Delicious stuffing. I'll explain my thoughts in a review later today.

3. This Means War

I cannot in good conscience recommend this film, although I know some of you would probably find it an entertaining diversion. Nothing wrong with that, I suppose; if you enjoy it, fine! Be that way.

4. Bullhead

Alamo Drafthouse is getting into the distribution game, it would appear, with this release of a Belgian crime drama. Apparently it's good.

5. Thin Ice

The curious case of Greg Kinnear's career continues. Anyone remember when he was the funniest guy on Talk Soup, way back in the day? That seems like forever ago.

6. Undefeated

The Oscar-nominated documentary comes to the big screen, if you're in the mood for some real-life Friday Night Lights action.

Ghost Rider will probably not be a trilogy...

CyleMooreon Feb. 17, 2012 at 7:27 a.m.

Taking my wife out for a late Valentine's date and not sure what too watch. I have a feeling it will be between watching The Vow and This Means War. I'm not really excited about either of them.

I. Am so. Damn. Excited. To see ghost rider.

Yes, Alex will right about it. I want to watch this once it hits blue ray.

snake_runneron Feb. 17, 2012 at 9:45 a.m.

@ThePhantomStranger: The Cage works in mysterious ways, my friend. Wait and see.

If Disney plans on John Carter being a series of films then I'm sure Ghost Rider will get another film. John Carter looks like it is going to be a good movie but sadly its not going to earn back its humongous budget and that will probably hamper Disney's plans for a trilogy or more. With Fox's Marvel films though it seems that the film don't need to make a ton of money to get another film in the series produced. After all Daredevil wasn't a huge success and somehow an Elektra spin-off film got made. Sorry for the long reply.

I'm looking forward to seeing Arrietty.
Aarny2on Feb. 17, 2012 at 10:38 a.m.

Nick Cage being Nick Cage is enough for me.

@ThePhantomStranger:

Critics and audiences don't think the same way.

MooseyMcManon Feb. 17, 2012 at 10:57 a.m.

I don't care what the critics say, nothing will stop me from seeing Ghost Rider. NOTHING.

PoToSkullon Feb. 17, 2012 at 10:58 a.m.

I don't understand the first sentence of this article.

wsowen02on Feb. 17, 2012 at 11:08 a.m.

Looking forward to Alex's review of Ghost Rider.

The Stegmanon Feb. 17, 2012 at 11:50 a.m.

Seriously...why do people think Ghost Rider 2 will be good? the first one was horrendous

vinsanityv22on Feb. 17, 2012 at 12:14 p.m.

It would be a shame if Arriety didn't resonate with kids because the dumb little (apparently stuffing-filled?) shits are so trained to respond to ADD-riddled garbage like Alvin and the Chipmunks these days. Just thinking about that makes me furious. I hope it does well. Good movies should. Alvin and the fucking Chipmunks shouldn't.

spilledmilkfactoryon Feb. 17, 2012 at 9:47 p.m.

I really, really wanna see Ghost Rider. But at the same time I'd feel awful for spending 11 bucks on a movie that will only be good because of how awful it is

Undeadpoolon Feb. 18, 2012 at 11:45 a.m.

You know what movie is damn near impossible to search for? Good. Can't even type "Good movie" cause then you just get a bunch of lists.

Eyzon Feb. 20, 2012 at 12:41 a.m.

Demon Possessed Rider? I would be fine with that XD

rondellstoneon April 14, 2012 at 3:05 a.m.

I had watch ghost rider 2 movie and the story of this movie makes me entertained a lot while watching it.

rondellstoneon April 16, 2012 at 12:17 a.m.

I had watch the ghost rider 2 movie and i really really like the story of it.

Dig Deeper into Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance

Nicolas Cage returns as the Ghost Rider and is hired to protect a mother and son who are being hunted by Blackout, a mysterious man turned into the Devil's minion, who also happens to be very well informed of the rider's past identities and strength.
