Is Jonathan Nolan Getting the Director's Chair for the Next Superman Movie?

Sure, it would be bald-faced nepotism, but Jonah Nolan's also got some serious creative chops.

Here&squot;s a good April Fools prank, Christopher Nolan: get your bro really drunk, then write "I am the director of Superman" all over his body with Sharpie markers. He might disown you, but it&squot;ll be hilarious.

Treat this as a very tenuous-yet-cool rumor, but film blog The Playlist (via Collider) is reporting that an unnamed source claims Warner Bros. is closely considering Christopher Nolan's younger brother, Jonathan, as both writer and director for the upcoming Superman: Man of Steel movie. The other contender is apparently David Goyer, co-writer of the script and previous Nolan brothers collaborator (on The Dark Knight), who seems like the more natural choice since he's directed before yet may be tied up with other projects and won't be able to carve out time from his schedule.

This will almost certainly be hashed out in more detail at Comic-Con before the weekend is out, so keep watching here for our man Matt Rorie's word on it. If you're wondering whether or not the elder Nolan bro might take this on, it seems like he's content being the "godfather" and taking a producer credit. Jonathan certainly has chops as a writer and, in fact, it was the adaptation of his short story Memento Mori that helped establish his brother as a major director. Can that same brilliance with the pen transfer over to the director's chair? We'll see what the panels in SoCal have to say on the matter.

From the brother of the director of the Dark Knight comes Superman: Man of Steel.

That makes no sense. He's never directed a single movie.

@ashogo: everybody starts some where, and from what I read on the guy he did help a lot with Memento.  Did you see Goyers movie, it SUCKED.

Yes let's consider David Goyer's directing career before we poo-poo the idea of Jonathan Nolan directing.

@johnnydamage: of course everyone starts somewhere, but it seems strange to give him such a big movie as his first project. And to my knowledge, all he contributed to Memento was the short story that it was based on, and even that was only a very loose adaptation.

I think the bigger problem this movie has is that it's a Superman Movie.

And Superman sucks.

I just hope, whether it is him or anyone else, a Superman movie is done right.
Not a difficult task, really, yet everyone thus far since Superman II keeps FUCKING it up!!

Superman is such a tough movie to pull off.  What makes Batman, Ironman, Spiderman, and the other successful franchises successful is they are human with all of the flaws and the ability to die and everything that comes with it.  Superman on the other hand is basically invincible with basically perfect morals, how do you make that successful in todays time.

Oddly, I'm hoping this is good only for Jon Nolan's sake since he is a very talented writer and has contributed to three amazing films, and counting.  I couldn't give a crap about Superman itself at this point.
raidingkvatchon July 23, 2010 at 5:48 a.m.
Certainly interesting, he obviously has skills as a writer, hopefully, if this turns out to be true, he'll have ability to translate what he does on the page to the screen, and he will of course have his brother, and proven director, on hand as a producer to help out and make sure it all goes smoothly.

@Red: Precisely the problem I've had with every other Superman property.
