Happy new year! January isn't looking very stacked when it comes to quality films. Luckily none of them look too bad either. They all seem like the medium between bad and good which for some of us is enough of a hopeful chance to go and see them.
January Movie Preview
1. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones
January 3rd- Not only is this a Paranormal Activity film coming out in the middle of winter but it's also one finally, but not really, taking some divergence from the same set up as before. Sure the long standing mythos still surrounds the events of this new movies but hopefully that means a fresh take and not a rehashed film.
2. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit
January 17th- Sad to see the once proud Tom Clancy franchise trying so hard to be something it's not. Gone are the attempts at political intrigue and real world politics and in their place seem to be poor attempts to copy Jason Bourne. Maybe the trailers aren't doing the film justice but I won't be running out to see this one.
3. Ride Along
January 17th- Kevin Hart is determined to cash in his relevancy points quickly. And Ice Cube continues to point out that Ice Cube isn't the intimidating hardcore rapper he thinks he is anymore. This movie looks like a disaster countdown clock rather than a comedy diamond in the rough.
4. Gimme Shelter
January 24th- If you had told me I'd want to watch the next Vanessa Hudgens films I wouldn't have believed you. This one looks like something special brewing however. Hudgens comes across as a burgeoning actress rather than another Disney failure. If you can only see one film a month, choose this one.
5. I, Frankenstein
January 24th- On paper the idea behind this movie is intriguing or at least that's what I get from the trailer. However the execution seems a little over dramatic. Frankenstein, in modern day, is caught in an all out war between ancient evils. What we get is a CGI filled bastardization of the Frankenstein story. Maybe this will turn out to be fine but I'm not holding my breath.
