Joaquin Returns to Letterman... is his Gum Still on Dave's Desk?

This more-than-likely has something to do with I'm Still Here.

 Yeah, he is still there.
 Yeah, he is still there.
Watch enough late night TV and you start enjoying the rare times when things go horribly wrong a lot more than the many times when things go peacefully right. It’s the same reason you watch bloopers on Sports Center. And, holy crap, does Joaquin Phoenix’s four-kinds-of-bizarre appearance on Letterman last year rank up there. Deadline’s let us know that he’s coming back to The Late Show next Wednesday, the 22, to presumably promote I’m Still Here (watch out for Alex’s review of that, soon.) Will he still have the bird nest beard? Will he be plugging his dope hip hop tracks? Will he give more tacit, distracted answers?

If you haven’t seen it, here's where the maybe-hoax, maybe drastic-career-change began.…

I’d be remiss not to mention that other notable entry into the annals of freak-out-quite-possibly-hoax interviews on Letterman. Everybody remembers Crispin Glover’s "appearance," right? He was shaking anxiously, he came close to kicking Dave in the head, he might have been on acid? He’s never actually come out and explained what happened, so it was probably an involved "going in deep" Kaufman-style prank (remember how Andy got slapped by  Jerry Lawler on Letterman?). We’ll see if Phoenix follows suit.

Here’s the original freak out… see it to believe it.  Then watch his two follow-up appearances. One  a few days later, and the other  a couple years later.

Crispin Glover looks like he is tripping REALLY BAD.

Is Joaquin doing a  Galifianakis impression?
jessej07on Sept. 13, 2010 at 10:18 a.m.
Crispin Glover is maybe my favorite actor that hasn't been in enough movies. Prank, acid trip, whatever it was on Letterman it was purely awesome.

So am I alone in not caring AT ALL?
mstrkrfton Sept. 13, 2010 at 10:31 a.m.
I am really looking forward to the follow-up interview.  And wow, that clip of Cripsin is awesome.

Thank you Mr. Pinchuk. This is one of the more crazy/interesting things I've seen lately. Any more late-night freakouts people are aware of?

People love "things go terribly wrong" moments. I, however, am incredibly uncomfortable watching them, don't know why.
litrockon Sept. 13, 2010 at 10:58 a.m.
Man, I love that Phoenix interview. I don't know how people ever thought he wasn't putting on an act. Just look at him! Glover, too, though his manic whatever is un-fucking-bearable. I much prefer the mumbling spiral of self-destruction Phoenix put on.

That said, the worst offender in ALL of these interviews is Letterman. God, what an awful guy to play against. And he's supposed to be funny?
fishinwithgunson Sept. 13, 2010 at 11:07 a.m.
Crispin Glover was in character for a movie he was promoting, don't remember the name.  He even had an album and there was a music video where the character was shown briefly.  I think the character's name was Ruben Farr.

And at least Ebert seems fairly convinced that Joaquin's persona and movie aren't a hoax, but he said if it still turns out to be a hoax, he'll be "seriously pissed," haha.

Awkward turtle.
Sanjon Sept. 13, 2010 at 11:25 a.m.

Here's an interview Joaquin had in 2006, pre-weirdness.

Yup, he's an awesome actor.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nK1YOz7apOs Glover was doing a character-bit to promote his movie. Just like Joaquin I bet.
skrutopon Sept. 13, 2010 at 12:16 p.m.
My theory is that Crispin Glover is normally all twitchy and weird until he starts tripping balls.  Then he acts normal.
Anwaron Sept. 13, 2010 at 1:03 p.m.
not on the video which is posted here, but at the end in the same show on Letterman, they're shaking hands and you can hear Joaquin saying, 'good job' or 'well done' can't remember.

after rewatching this (watch the last 20 seconds) I think I heard 'good job'.
NateDoggon Sept. 13, 2010 at 1:20 p.m.
That first video is fucking hilarious.
ThePickleon Sept. 13, 2010 at 2:08 p.m.
Both Joaquin and Crispin were doing characters, I think...
Besetmenton Sept. 13, 2010 at 9:20 p.m.
See the thing about Andy Kaufman and Crispin Glover is that they're funny. Joaquin Phoenix? Not so much.
TwoOneFiveon Sept. 14, 2010 at 1:02 a.m.
@Pickle: crispin.... maybe not. dude always acts weird, to this day.

Dig Deeper into Joaquin Phoenix

Joaquin Rafael Phoenix is a musician, producer and actor. Probably his most notable role was as Johnny Cash in the biopic Walk The Line. He is also the brother of deceased actor River Phoenix.
