John Carpenter is Back and Directing Fangland

The legendary cult director returns with an updated version of Bram Stoker's Dracula.

 Kurt Russell has nothing to do with this story, but his butt-chin is said to be Associate Producing.

If you're a fan of 80's cult horror/sci-fi films, you likely love John Carpenter's nuts. You've also probably been wondering where the crap he's been lately. The last feature he directed was 2001's less-than-stellar Ice Cube vehicle Ghosts of Mars, but his IMDB page shows numerous films currently announced or in production.

Variety is now reporting that, in addition to those, he's signed on to direct Fangland, which appears to be an update of Bram Stoker's Dracula set in modern day. In the film, Dracula is also a Transylvanian arms dealer, and Hilary Swank plays a TV producer sent to interview him.  No word on whether or not Rowdy Roddy Piper will be playing the Van Helsing role, but I'm officially founding that rumor right now. Quick, someone create a Facebook group!

I actually enjoyed Ghosts of Mars. Good to see that he might be working again. Sounds like the story would be a good fit for him.

I'm not that fussed on this, I have not enjoyed a Carpenter film since the 80s

I liked Escape from L.A. but I'm not very interested in Fangland until at least a trailer.

Isn't he in the middle of finishing off something about an asylum?

@wrecks:
Thats ace, So glad to see him making movies again. I know he has a Great movie still in him. That Cigarette Burns, Masters of Horror episode was brilliant... The one with Ron Perlman no so much.

I'd like to see him do sci-fi again, but a modern Dracula? I dunno...

You are the first person I've come across who likes that film. Interesting.

Let's hope he pumps out something decent.   I enjoyed Carpenter's "Vampires", but I don't know about this one.  Maybe it can do well, I just want something by Carpenter to come out to blot out the stench of all the other movies being produced of late.

@SeamonsterNeil: I'm hoping the long hiatus has re-ignited the spark that is missing in his later movies. We need the old JC back.

I too enjoyed John Carpenter's Vampires and this book intrigued me in the bookstore.

Look, I hate vampires and shit, but as long as John Carpenter returns to making films that don't suck, I'm cool.

Just...please, no more Ghosts of Mars, okay?
