John Goodman Joins Hanks in Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

The larger than life actor will star in the adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer novel.

Given the jarring Pete Postlethwaite news from yesterday, I've decided to stop taking my more beloved actors for granted. John Goodman's a guy I love in just about everything he does, regardless of how good the overall movie is in which he's starring. He's always shown deceptively great acting skills, even way back when everyone knew him as a sitcom dad on Roseanne. He's also always been incredibly overweight. so I'm thankful we still have the dude around today.

The actor already has a full 2011 ahead of him, starring in Kevin Smith's Red State, as well as Thicker with Guy Pearce and The Artist with James Cromwell. It's been announced now that Goodman will join Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock in the cast of Stephen Daldry's Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, which will likely hit in 2012. The tale, adapted from Jonathan Safran Foer's novel of the same name, tells the story of a young boy who loses his father on 9/11, and finds a mysterious key in his belongings. His ensuing journey through New York City serves as a catharsis for him as he meets various new people also dealing with grief. Goodman will play the doorman at the boy's apartment building, and apparently plays a crucial role in the story.

This sounds like the type of supporting role that Goodman is so well suited for. He's made a fantastic career for himself out of these smaller roles, helping to raise a film's quality without taking the spotlight. Working off a script from Eric Roth ( Forrest Gump) and directed by Daldry ( The Reader, Billy Elliot, The Hours), this is likely going to be on our radars for quite some time.

Walter is the most entertaining character in Lebowski, and that's saying a hell of a lot.

I've decided to stop taking my more beloved actors for granted.

This needs to be a Screened monthly feature video or article that features actors and actresses that we shouldn't take for granted.

Goodman apparently lost close to 200 lbs in the last year, so hopefully he'll be around for a while. He's looking pretty good these days.

Don't get me wrong, John Goodman is indeed a talented actor but anything he's ever done after The Big Lebowski makes me ill when I see him because he isn't incredibly overweight as you say he is morbidly obese.   ( yes he was overweight in that film as well )

Not making judgements against the man here but it is frightening seeing him he is so large.  It won't be long before he is gone unless he loses the weight.  I know that isn't the intent of your article but I just can't avoid the subject whenever I think of the man.

Being Australian I wish I could say that Goodman was a national treasure of mine, but that's up to you America. Treasure & respect him for the places he holds in our hearts.

Guess I'll do the same for Hugo Weaving or something.

I <3 John Goodman. If it were possible to love an actor like he were family it would be him.

When sushi becomes art as much as it is food, the art of presenting it on film becomes transformative not only to the cuisine, but the people who make it.
