Pretty big news out of the sci-fi world today as Deadline is reporting that The Hunger Games has found its two male leads. Josh Hutcherson, coming off The Kids Are Alright, has been cast as Peeta Mellark. Hutcherson’s name might also sound familiar, because he was in the running to play Peter Parker in the upcoming Spiderman reboot and made this kick ass audition tape. The role of Gale Hawthorne will be played by Liam Hemsworth, the brother of Thor star Chris Hemsworth. Liam’s perhaps best known for his work on Australian TV. Both actors will joined onscreen by Jennifer Lawrence, who will be playing the protagonist, Katniss Everdeen.

For those of you who know nothing about The Hunger Games, the film is based on the first book of a trilogy written by Suzanne Collins. Here’s the official synopsis:

The Hunger Games chronicles a dystopic Capitol which requires its twelve subjugated districts to pay tribute in the form of a teenage boy and girl, forced to participate in the annual “Hunger Games,” a fight-to-the-death live televised event. Katniss Everdeen’s little sister is chosen in the lottery to participate and Katniss volunteers to take her place. Although persevering through hardship is commonplace for Katniss, she must start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love in order to win the games and return home.”

Gary Ross, of Big, Pleasantville, and Seabiscuit fame, is set to direct. Being perfectly honest, I haven’t read any of the books. I’ve known about their plot for a little while, only because talk of the film adaptation has been circulating around. So, I’m really in no position to agree or disagree with the casting choices. But, I will say this… Jennifer Lawrence is extremely talented so I’m thinking she has to be a solid choice. Anyway, what do you all think? Do you agree with casting?

Jennifer Lawrence means I'm interested

I have no idea if these books are good or not, but the main character being named "Katniss Everdeen" makes me think that they're not.

With a name like Hunger Games I was either expecting a documentary on world hunger, or on the other end of the spectrum, Jackass, but with overeating.

Jesus, these character names are really different. Obviously I haven't read the books, but I was somewhat interested. Maybe I will grab the sample on my Kindle later.

I've heard good things about the book The Hunger Games, and I've been meaning to read it. A movie coming out might make me get my arse in gear and actually read it.

I've read the first book and thought it was great, currently reading the sequel named Catching Fire and I like that they chose Jennifer Lawrence to play Katniss, I'm not too sure about the two dudes though, never seen them in anything

Man I hope they don't fuck this movie up
TwinkleTowezon April 4, 2011 at 1:06 p.m.
I'm excited for this movie, but I'm cautious. they're going to want to make it PG-13, so I hope it doesn't lose anything because of that. I loved the first two books, but I hated the ending to the third one. But these people seem great for the cast. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of it

This made me sad... they are suppose to be 17 year old kids aren't they. The guy who is playing Gale looks 25.  Hutcherson seems like a good pick for Peeta, and Jennifer Lawrence might be a good fit for Katniss.

For the role of Haymitch, I want John Fawkes. He seems good for it.

Is this the kids version of Battle Royale?

i only read the first but it was rivetting.  katniss is a plant she is named after, btw.

anyway, im liking all these casting choices.  i was wondering why it wasnt mentioned that liam hemsworth was the kid in "the last song."  i thought he did great there.

I really didn't like the book that much. To be fair, I only read the first one. I was intrigued by the setting and synopsis, but the main character did nothing for me. Oh well, it's good to know that there are people out there looking forward to this.

Peter Stormare for Haymitch. Make it happen.

I really enjoyed the books, looking forward to the movie doubly so now that Jennifer Lawrence is going to be in it!

@Korne: Wasn't Gale supposed to be older than Katniss and Peeta? I thought he was a few years older. I'm sure they can make it work with make-up etc. I can't wait to see who they pick for Haymitch, plus Cinna too!

I've only read the first book so far and really enjoyed it, my main worry about it being made into a movie is it being made into a Twilight-esq movie, might be worrying about nothing, but jeez if that happens...
Hyuzenon April 4, 2011 at 2:30 p.m.
Wow... this cast is... not terrible... what are the chances?

Of course the book is fairly graphic, unless they really push the 14a rating it'll probably suck and focus on the relationship
MisterMouseon April 4, 2011 at 3:43 p.m.
Don't know too much about the cast so cant really make a decision about it, only time will tell I guess.
ArbitraryWateron April 4, 2011 at 4:49 p.m.
I really didn't like the first book, so consider me less than excited for a movie about it. It's basically: POST APOCALYPTIC DEATH SPORT but for tweens.
HumphreyLeeon April 4, 2011 at 8:14 p.m.
Read the first book because it was a $5 Kindle download and appreciated how a "Young Adult" book had no issues with the levels of brutality they described, especially since it tended to be heartbreaking in some regard. Working with that, the Jennifer Lawrence casting is actually pretty brilliant, so I might see this in live action.

This sounds like it might be interesting, provided it doesn't turn into a Twilight-esque teen movie.
Lemonatoron April 4, 2011 at 9:42 p.m.
Having read all of the books that's not really what I expected the people to look like. It seems like they have the male leads the wrong way around.

Dig Deeper into The Hunger Games

An adaption of the popular novel of the same name, Hunger Games centers around a post-apocalyptic world where one boy and one girl from each of the 12 districts are chosen to fight to the death in a televised broadcast as a way to demonstrate the government's power.
