Justified Renewed For Fourth Season

FX decides that the third season of Justified warrants a fourth; ratings are notably up since last season.

It's not terrifically surprising that season three of Justified is a mild slowdown from the sustained excellence that was Season 2, but even so, it's still one of the best shows on television, and apparently people are recognizing that, as viewership for this season is averaging something like a 10% increase over last year. So it's not a terrific surprise that FX yesterday announced that it'll be bringing the show back for a fourth season.

At this rate the only real question is how long the show can continue to maintain its momentum. In reading various opinions around the web, there are some complaints that the first couple of seasons have seemed to rotate around the theme of having most of the early episodes involve a lot of one-off cases for Raylan, and then having the overarching storyline come to a head in the last few episodes. I can't say that I necessarily agree; I think that the second season and this season have done a pretty great job of balancing season-spanning storylines with stuff that can be wrapped up in a single 60-minute episode. Again, after season 2, anything they could've done this year likely would've been a bit of a letdown, but at the very least we have Neal McDonough killing it as a gay mobster lackey.

At any rate, Season Four will likely commence in early 2013. Excited?

That's awesome news, I'm really enjoying the third season but I had no idea if it was successful.

That is good news because if they didn't Timothy Olyphant would of probably shot them.

Dude Neal McDonough brings it with the right kinda crazy.

I still haven't seen any Justified. I want to, but I just haven't gotten around to it. I should really fix that.

Good to hear! And yes, if you haven't watched the show for some reason, consider watching it. It does a nice job of walking the line between Western morality tales and postmodern crime thriller - while also being its own thing.

Only tangentially related point: ever notice what the characters are watching on TV? Rewatching some episodes I started to realize that they tend to go with one of three types of things - a film noir, a western, or one of those Funniest Home videos clip shows. I'm pretty sure who watches what means something.

Season 2 was the best and no one can top Mags, but it feels like Season 3 is more consistent. There haven't been a ton of one-offs, except maybe that witness protection episode early on, and the Dewey Crowe Crank episode, but that was one of the best episodes! There's too many good new characters like Quarles and Limehouse, they don't have time to sit on their hands. There isn't any garbage like "Winona taking a ton of cash from the evidence locker because I don't know, why not?"

@Spatulalad: Last night's episode had Wynn Duffy watching women's tennis. Take with that what you will...

Great news I wouldn't be objected to screened doing a recap for Justified instead of Walking Dead which would be pretty awesome to here Rorie's thoughts on each episode

Wynn was talking about watching women's volleyball back in Season 2, I think? Its his thing.

My bullshit theory is that characters who watch cowboy movies are good guys, characters who watch funniest home video clip shows are going to die or go to prison, and film noir watchers...I don't know? Yeah, pretty much a bullshit theory but I'll keep trying to make it work.
