Kate Beckinsale Returns to Underworld

The star of the first two Underworld films returns for the 4th in the series.

Just when you thought a franchise was dead, they pull the original star back in. ComingSoon reports that Kate Beckinsale has signed on to reprise the role of Selene in the upcoming Underworld 4. This will mark her return to the franchise she lent a (beautiful) face to with 2003's Underworld and 2006's Underworld: Evolution, but bowed out of for 2009's Underworld: Rise of the Lycans.

Beckinsale's husband, Len Wiseman, directed those first two pictures as well, though he will not be returning for Underworld 4, as he appears busy making the, ugh, Total Recall remake. Wiseman will still act as producer, though. No other director has yet been attached.

The script is being written by John Hlavin with revisions by J. Michael Straczynski. Production will commence in Vancouver in March 2011.

Revisions by JMS sound good to me. I will trust that man with pretty much anything that he does.

I don't know how they managed to take an interesting concept like a vampire-werewolf war and turn it into a shitty movie, but they did.

I thought the first two movie were ok but the 3rd was so boring... I'm glad there will be a 4th movie and the original star is coming back.

Awesome. I loved these movies. Especially the artistic look of them. Glad to see they are making more. Haters gonna hate.

Wooooooo!!! She's back!
The first Underworld was good fun, Evolution didn't really do it for me. From what I've read, it seems like this will be Kate's last involvement in the franchise and that she wasn't even that keen to do it anyway. Whatever the case may be, it seems like she kinda needed this - career-wise at least.

@bunnyman: Well, without giving away the ending of the first film...it seems unlikely. But yeah, Bill Nighy is great.
@FLStyle: Good point - they didn't leave a whole lot of room for a sequel at the end of Evolution.

They'll just Resident Evil it and take away all of her powers at the beginning of the movie. Although I think a Beckinsale in god mode movie would be fun.

Because both the original vampire and original werewolf were both killed shouldn't the existence of both be gone? Isn't that why there was that deal, but they had to lock the one up?

That's what I thought anyway - like when the last vampire was killed, Selene's eyes turned brown and the daylight didn't burn her - which would suggest she's gone all normal. But in the last few lines, she also mentions something about the bloodlines of vampires and werewolves being blurred, so perhaps there's going to be multiple hybrids in U4?

I liked the first Underworld and really liked the second one (mostly for the villain). The prequel movie was okay, but not as much fun as the other two. I'm not opposed to another Underworld movie, but I'm not expecting anything special.
